CWC,UPF to contest under UNP's symbol

The Ceylon Workers Congress (CWC) and Upcountry People's Front (UPF) Tuesday decided to contest the forthcoming general election in alliance with the main opposition United National Party (UNP). "Candidates of both parties would contest under the UNP's election symbol 'Elephant', CWC and UPF sources said.
This decision was taken at a conference held Tuesday in Colombo between the leaders of the UNP, CWC and UPF. CWC and UPF candidates would contest Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Matale, and Badulla and Colombo electoral districts under the UNP's elephant symbol, party sources said. Mr.Arumugam Thondaman of CWC, Mr.P.Chandrasekaran of UPF and Mr.Ranil Wickremasinghe of UNP would sign the Memorandum of Understanding Thursday following an agreement reached Tuesday, sources said. Messrs Arumugam Thondaman, M.S.Sellasamy R.Yogarajan and P.Chandrasekaran on behalf of CWC and UPF, Messrs Ranil Wickremasinghe, Gamini Atukorale and Ravi Karunanayaka on behalf of UNP attended Tuesday's talks. The CWC and UPF were constituents of the ruling Peoples' Alliance till the dissolution of the parliament on October 10 midnight this year. CWC's leader Mr.Arumugam Thondaman resigned his minister post one day before the dissolution of parliament.
