Major parties start submitting nomination lists

Major political parties have started submitting their lists of candidates for the forthcoming parliamentary elections from Thursday. The ruling People's Alliance Thursday submitted its list of candidates contesting the Hambantota electoral district. The main opposition United National Party submitted its lists of candidates for the Gampaha and Moneragala electoral districts.
The Marxist Janata Vimukthi Peramuna submitted its lists of candidates contesting the Gampaha, Nuwara Eliya, Badulla, Kurunegala, Galle and Matara, Hambantota, Kegalle, Matale, Anuradhapura, Puttalam, Jaffna and Vanni electoral districts. The Sihala Urumaya party submitted its list of candidates contesting the Colombo district. The final day of filing nominations by political parties and independent groups has been fixed for Saturday. The Tamil parties' Alliance is expected to submit their lists of candidates in the northeast districts Friday and Saturday, party sources said. Several small political parties and independent groups also submitted their lists of candidates for several districts in the southern part of the country Thursday, election department officials said.
