A United National Party (UNP) candidate for Jaffna district Saturday handed over to the police in Nelliyadi a weapon which he had seized from Eelam People's Democratic Party (EPDP) cadres, police and UNP sources in Jaffna said.
The UNP candidate Mr.S.Arunasalam was stopped Saturday afternoon by two armed EPDP cadres at Manthikai, and was warned that the UNP should stop campaigning against the EPDP. One of the EPDP cadres had then threatened the UNP candidate with his weapon, according to the UNP sources. The UNP candidate and his supporters, however, overpowered the EPDP cadres and seized the gun, which they handed over to the Nelliyadi police, the sources said. The UNP candidate and his supporters were on their way to attend a campaign meeting in Chunnakam.
