The Liberation Tigers overran a camp of military trained Police in Palameenmadhu, a coastal suburb of Batticaloa town, around 11.30 p.m. Saturday night, security sources in the east said. Three military trained Policemen were killed and nine were wounded in the attack. The Tigers attacked a Police post behind the Eravur telecommunication building around the same time, killing a ‘security assistant’ working with the Sri Lankan security forces. Eravur is 14 kilometres north of Batticaloa.
The Tigers burnt the Palameenmadhu camp and removed weapons and equipment, sources said. There were 35 Police personnel in the camp when the Tigers launched the attack. Most of the Policemen deserted their positions when the Tigers began the assault, the sources added.
