EU election observers arrive

The European Union (EU) Observers' Mission has arrived Colombo to monitor the forthcoming general election. The members of the mission met the leader of the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress Saturday. The mission is to meet the other leaders of political parties contesting the general election scheduled to be held on December 05, 2001.
Members of the EU observers' mission would be posted to Ampara, Batticaloa and Kandy districts to monitor elections, sources said. Meanwhile the Police Election Secretariat Saturday said that it has received 839 complaints related to election violence since nominations were filed on October 27. The main opposition United National Party has lodged 438 complaints and 274 by the ruling People's Alliance. During the last twenty hours that ended Saturday morning at 6 a.m. police received fifty one complaints, sources said.
