'Peace saboteurs must be defeated' - SLMC

[TamilNet, Thursday, 16 May 2002, 21:53 GMT]
"The Muslims will co-operate with the Liberation Tigers to annihilate the evil forces which are all out to sabotage the peace initiatives mooted by the present government with Norwegian facilitation," declared the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress parliamentarian of the Trincomalee district, Mr.K.M.Thowfeek, addressing the opening event of the Kuchchaveli Political Office of the LTTE at Nilaveli held Thursday evening.

Nilaveli, an agricultural and tourist village fourteen km north of Trincomalee town, was gaily decorated with yellow and red flags, and a cutout of LTTE leader V.Pirapaharan was seen erected at the venue of the opening event. Large crowds of Tamil and Muslim villagers attended the function.

Mr.Thooyavan, Kuchchaveli LTTE political Secretary, declared open the office. Mr.Thangan, an LTTE activist hoisted the Tamil Eelam national flag. Trincomalee district LTTE political secretary Mr.Ruban unveiled the name board of the LTTE political office.

Mr.Thowfeek who hails from Mutur town in the Trincomalee district said this was the third event of the LTTE he was attending. "At no stage in the Tamil liberation struggle of the LTTE did Muslims cast any adverse remarks maligning the freedom fighters," he said.

LTTE Trincomalee district political secretary, Mr.A.Ruban, said that, "the LTTE will not give room for anyone to sabotage the current peace process initiated with the signing of the cease-fire agreement between the UNF government and the Liberation Tigers."

"Some recent remarks by the Prime Minister have shown that he has wavered in his stand because of local elections expected to be held shortly in the South," said Mr. Ruban. "This is my personal view. Communal politics is not needed today to win elections. People are vigorously supporting the peace efforts. There is no place for communalism in the country."

Kuchchaveli Divisional Secretary Mr.K.S.Jeyachandra, Tamil National Alliance local leader Mr.K.Thurairetnasingham and several others also spoke. Nilaveli MPCS President Mr.K.Thambiah presided.
