Proper burial rites requested for bodies left in bunker

A bizarre application was made by a son Tuesday before the Chavakachcheri Magistrate seeking permission to exhume the bodies of his dead father and mother which have been left inside the bunker in his house at Nunavil two years ago before he left the area at the height of large military operation launched by the Sri Lanka Army (SLA).
The applicant has now sought the permission of the court to take out the bodies from the bunker to conduct the last rites to his dead parents. The son in his application submitted to Chavakachcheri court said he lived with his family at Nunavil in his house in the year 2000. In the military operation launched by the SLA in May that year his eighty-two year old father and eighty year old mother were killed in artillery shell attack. He had to immediately vacate the area with surviving members of his family and had to leave the bodies of his parents in the bunker in his house, the application further said. The Magistrate Mr.A.Premshankar Tuesday allowed the application and fixed the date for the exhumation of the bodies on November 16 in his presence.
