EPDP return to Delft draws protest

[TamilNet, Saturday, 16 November 2002, 20:42 GMT]
Forty cadres of the paramilitary Eelam People's Democratic Party (EPDP) landed on the island of Delft, Saturday, travelling in a Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) craft. The people of the Delft immediately lodged a complaint with the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) in Jaffna opposing the presence of EPDP cadres.

The SLN craft landed at Mavilathurai jetty in Delft Saturday morning with around forty EPDP cadres, villagers said.

Escorted by SLN personnel and Police, EPDP cadres first went to the office of the Delft Pradesya Sabah (PS) where they commandeered a tractor. They then went to the spot in the tractor where their camp was functioning two months ago, they said.

On hearing the news people of the village staged a demonstration in front of the newly established camp Saturday around noon, protesting against the presence of the EPDP cadres.

Later a complaint was lodged with the SLMM in Jaffna. Some members of the Jaffna SLMM visited Delft Island Saturday evening to see the situation there, sources said.
