TNA meets PM over EPDP cadres in Delft

[TamilNet, Monday, 18 November 2002, 19:41 GMT]
A Tamil National Alliance (TNA) parliamentary delegation Monday brought to the notice of the Prime Minister Mr.Ranil Wickremasinghe that members of Eelam Democratic party (EPDP) now in Delft island in Jaffna district are armed and are also moving about in naval uniform. The TNA delegation requested the Prime Minister to take stern steps to prevent incidents similar to those that had taken place at Kanchirankuda and Trincomalee last month, in the Delft Island.

The TNA delegation led by Mr.Sampanthan and comprising parliamentarians Messrs V.Anandasangaree, A.Vinayagamoorthy, K.Thangavadivel, Selvam Adaikalanathan, N.Raviraj, G.G.Gajendrakumar, Raja Kuhaneswaran and K.Thurairetnasingham met the Prime Minister in the parliamentary complex Monday.

The Prime Minister immediately summoned the Inspector General of Police Mr.T.E.Anandarajah who was in the official gallery watching the committee stage debate of the Interior Ministry and discussed with him about the situation in Delft Island following the return of some EPDP cadres.

The EPDP members now at Delft have been given full support by the Sri Lanka Navy and the Police. The people of Delft have a right to oppose the presence of the EPDP members there in a democratic way, TNA delegation stressed.

The TNA delegation was told at the discussion that the Police department has sent a senior Superintendent of Police to Jaffna to take immediate steps to maintain law and order in the Delft Island.
