Vadamaradchi traders to observe 'hartal' against police firing

Nelliady and Puloly Traders Associations in the Vadamarachchi division in
Jaffna district Tuesday decided to observe hartal (general shut down) in
their respective areas Wednesday protesting against the police firing on
traders this afternoon on hundreds of civilians picketed the office of the
para military Eelam People's Democratic Party (EPDP), sources said.
Spokespersons for the associations said that most of the injured in the
attack were traders of the area. According to Nelliady Traders Association, all business establishments
would be closed Wednesday as a mark of protest to the firing by Nelliady
Police on traders. The Puloly Traders Association also Tuesday decided to close down all shops
in its area on Wednesday. Traders of both areas are to hand over memoranda to the authorities
concerned to ensure security for them in future, sources said.
