Day of mourning in Kandy

[TamilNet, Saturday, 31 January 1998, 23:59 GMT]
Shops were closed this morning in the hill city of Kandy to mark a day of mourning for the destruction caused to the Dalada Maligawa - the Temple of the Tooth by a powerful lorry bomb.

White and yellow (the colour associated with Buddhism) flags were put up all over Kandy.

The Prime Minister of Sri Lankan Srimavo Bandaranaike called on the country to observe today as a day of mourning.

Leaflets were issued yesterday by an organisation called the Kandyan Upcountry Buddhist Society to all businesses in Kandy asking them to remain closed today.
