[TamilNet, Sunday, 02 February 2003, 15:00 GMT]
The Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) has started construction of a new camp at Gopalapuram in Nilaveli village, sixteen km north of Trincomalee town, residents said. The Gopalapuram Rural Development Society Sunday handed a memorandum signed
by more than hundred Tamils to the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) with copies to the Head Office of the Liberation Tigers and Tamil parliamentarians of
the district protesting against the constructing a new navy camp, sources said.
Mr.Tilak, Trincomalee district political head of LTTE lodged a protest with the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission in Trincomalee regarding the construction of a new SLN camp in the middle of the Nilaveli. The head of SLMM in Trincomalee accompanied by Mr.Tilak visited the place where the
construction of the new camp is in progress, sources said. The Gopalapuram Rural Development Society in its memorandum has said the establishment of the new SLN camp would damage the normalcy now prevailing
in the village. Students and women would be subjected to untold hardship if the new navy camp is allowed to be constructed in the area. The new camp will encompass several prime acres of lands suitable for cultivation and would deprive the livelihood of the
villagers causing immense hardships to the farmers of the area, Gopalapuram residents complained.
