Trinco Rotary holds Zonal Interact conference

Students from schools in Jaffna, Trincomalee and Batticaloa are participating in the fourth Interact Zonal conference which is being held in Trincomalee St.Joseph's College hall starting Saturday for two days. The theme of the two-day zonal conference is "Progress and Understanding," said the conference secretary Mr.G.K.Joel Janantan.

Under the Rotary Movement, Interact clubs are formed in schools all over the world for boys and girls under age 18. Intract clubs from schools Jaffna, Trincomalee and Batticaloa districts form Interact zone 5 in the island. The main aim of the formation of Interact clubs in schools is to inculcate in the minds of the younger generation healthy leadership quality, said
Rotarian T.Thavasilingam, Charter Secretary and Past President of the
Trincomalee Rotary Club who is also the Assistant District Governor of the
Rotary in Sri Lanka. Participating as the chief guest at the first day conference Mr. Thavasilingam said the main purpose of the zonal conference is to provide opportunity to the members of Interact clubs to share their views and to promote mutual understading.

The Director of Youth Services of the Trincomalee Rotary Club,
Mr.R.Rajarammohan, participating as the guest of honour said good leadership
is needed to ensure progress of the country. Interact clubs in schools
could play a vital role in promoting good leadership quality among younger
generation, he said. He added for the first time in Trincomalee an Interact club has been formed
in the school for hearing impaired children in the east port town that would enable disabled youths to participate in the moulding of new a generation. Another Interact club has been formed in a school in the
outskirts of the town.
