Tension prevailed near the Puttur--Meesalai junction in the Thenmaradchi area of the Jaffna district Tuesday night when Sri Lanka Army soldiers came in a motor
bike and assaulted N.Subramaniam,63, when he was walking towards his home on foot, civil sources said.
On hearing cries of the injured elder, residents of the area gathered in hundreds and started to attack the SLA soldiers, civil sources said. The timely intervention of the political activists of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam defused
the tension and the LTTE activists dispatched the injured person to a government hospital, the sources said. Meanwhile, in another incident, SLA soldiers who visited Jaffna town in a motor bike on Tuesday allegedly attacked Mr. N.Kantharasa,55, who was working in a business establishment. This incident is said to have taken place at the Jaffna bus stand area and
the injured employee was immediately admitted at the Jaffna teaching
hospital, medical sources said. The injured Mr.Kantharasa later made a complaint to the Jaffna police that
an army soldier had assaulted him when he asked the soldier to keep his motorbike
aside without obstructing customers coming into the business establishment,
police said. An inquiry into this alleged attack on Mr.Kantharasa is to be held
at the SLA's 513 Brigade headquarters, which is located at Chunnakam
Thursday, according to sources at the Jaffna branch of the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka.
