[TamilNet, Tuesday, 12 August 2003, 18:27 GMT]
The Marxist cum Sinhala Nationalist Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna Tuesday held a demonstration and rally in Colombo against handing over the northeast interim administration to the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam and what the JVP said were attempts by the United National Front government to bring foreign forces into the country, sources said.

Addressing the rally at the end of the demonstration held near the Norwegian embassy in Colombo, JVP parliamentarian Mr.Wimal Weerawanse said that establishing an interim administration council in the northeast province and handing it over to the LTTE would be tantamount to establishing a separate state.

Thousands of JVP cadres participated in the demonstration, which commenced around 3.30p.m.from Campel Park. Demonstrators carried black flags and banners and shouted slogans condemning the UNF government, the LTTE and the Norwegian facilitators.

Demonstrators arrived at Lipton's Square and held a protest in front of the office of the Norwegian Embassy for about half an hour. Later, a meeting was held close to the Norwegian Embassy. Journalists were not allowed to go near the leaders of the JVP who were present at the scene. Tight security was provided to JVP leaders and parliamentarians by party cadres, sources said.

More armed police were deployed with barbed wire and water cannon, sources said.
