Pongu Thamil event in Vavuniya tomorrow

The preparations for the Pongu Thamil (Tamil upsurge) event in Vavuniya have been completed, and the event will be held at the Vavuniya Urban Council grounds on Wednesday at 2 p.m. The theme of the event is, "We want to live in our own homes. The Sri Lanka Armed forces occupying our homes should go back to their homes. An interim administration with full authority should be created toward a permanent solution for permanent peace. We shall tell the world about our aspirations,” organizers of the event said.

Before the event commences, processions starting at five different locations outside the Vavuniya town will converge on the Vavuniya council grounds.

In a news release Tuesday, the organizing committee of the Pongu Thamil event said that there is “ tremendous public support” for the event, and those working in support of the event include University students and business people.

In the morning, there will be special prayer sessions in all religious places of worship in Vavuniya.

The Vavuniya town has come alive with festive spirit, sources said. Decorations are seen at the three major entrances to the town. The Urban Council grounds are full of lights and decorations with red and yellow flags.

The Sri Lanka police has deployed nearly 600 police personnel around the venue of the Pongu Thamil event, saying they want to guard against any violence as there will be a large gathering of people.
