A group of academics, administrators and nurses from the University of Tromsø in Norway is visiting Batticaloa to discuss the assistance needed to create a Medical Faculty at the Eastern University, sources in the Eastern town said.

Mr. Eriksel, the Project Director at the University of Tromsø, led the 10-member group that included medical professors and lecturers.

The Norwegian group met with Dr.S. Ravindranath, the Acting Vice-Chancellor of the Eastern University, Mr. A.D. Harris, the Registrar, Dr. Rajendra, member of the University’s advisory committee and deans of various faculties at the Eastern Univeristy.

At the Batticaloa teaching hospital, the group met with the Medical Director and doctors.

According to Mr. Harris, the Registrar of the Eastern University, a seminar over the creation of the new faculty will be held on Saturday and Sunday at the New Road Hall of the University. The Norwegian group will attend the seminar, as will representatives from the medical faculties at the Universities in Peradeniya, Jaffna and Batticaloa, and the medical doctors from the Batticaloa hospital.

The proposed aid is part of the Norwegian government’s peace efforts in the country, and the visit is intended to gather information on what kind of assistance would be needed, said Mr. Harris.
