Canadian minister fails to address genocide, annihilation of Tamil territory

[TamilNet, Sunday, 03 February 2013, 00:13 GMT]
Speaking to media at a gathering in Markham, Ontario (where Eezham Tamils live in considerable number), Mr Jason Kenny, Canadian Minister of Citizenship, Immigration, and Multiculturalism, who recently visited Colombo, was speaking on failure of Sri Lanka in addressing reconciliation, war-crimes accountability and general failure in protecting human rights and rule of law. He also mentioned excessive militarization of the North and East, even though in answering questions he said that he understands militarization to some extent. But the minister, seeing Tamils as minorities and not as a nation, failed to address the pressing question currently faced by Eezham Tamils as a nation in the island, i.e., structural genocide, Sinhala colonization supported by militarization and annihilation of the territoriality of the nation of Eezham Tamils.

The Canadian Tamils attending his meeting also equally failed in raising the fundamental issues with the minister.

If we do not see significant progress in Reconciliation, Accountability and Human Rights then the Prime Minister will be disinclined to attend the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meet in Sri Lanka, the Canadian minister said.

But in expounding his idea of accountability during the Q&A session, sounding like Robert Blake, he said ‘some accountability and some regret’.

The minister also tried to explain to the audience what he had meant by telling in Colombo: “Canada regards itself as a friend of Sri Lanka. The government of Prime Minister Harper, we believe, helped to hasten the end of the war by banning the Tamil Tigers as a illegal terrorist entity and the World Tamil Movement by cracking down on their fund raising and political operations in Canada. We are opposed to all forms of terrorism and extremism, but we are also champions of human rights and dignity.”

The minister said that by telling so he only reminded Colombo of its responsibility to now reciprocate to Canada’s expectations.

In Colombo, the minister was referring to the ‘pressure’ faced by Tamils in Canada by LTTE ‘extortions’, but in Markham he was telling the audience that his government acted against its own domestic political interests in ‘helping’ Colombo by banning the LTTE.

Canadian Tamils have the responsibility to sternly remind the Establishment at Ottawa that unless it goes beyond the rhetoric of Reconciliation, Accountability and Human Rights, and takes at least ‘some’ concrete steps in practically achieving the protection of the nation, territory and sovereignty of Eezham Tamils, it is not coming anywhere near their aspirations, commented new generation Eezham Tamil activists in Canada.

Ottawa has to be reminded that if it is not helping the Eezham Tamils to achieve their fundamentals, which are not contradictory to the norms of humanity, Commonwealth and to the realities in the island, then it will never be forgiven for completely destroying the military balance of Eezham Tamils, the activists further said.
