Wigneswaran pours out heart on ‘reconciliation-development’ deception

[TamilNet, Saturday, 15 February 2014, 13:47 GMT]
Northern Provincial Council (NPC) Chief Minister, C.V. Wigneswaran on Thursday openly came out with his frustration about the ways reconciliation and development is practised in the north and east of the island, and the ways the mandate of the NPC is sabotaged. He was referring to the gravity of militarisation, the conqueror's perspective of ‘reconciliation’ imposed on the conquered, and the conqueror's ‘development’ that is neither victim-specific nor owned by the people of the land. Given his background, his denunciations were confined to the State and government in Colombo. But the entire paradigm that frustrates him originates from elsewhere and the message is for the ultimate culprits, commented Tamil activists for alternative politics in the island.

The Sinhala militarisation of the country of Eezham Tamils, maintaining and grooming the military from the resources of the conquered, demographic and structural genocide to raze down political and national questions, and ‘development’ not merely from the point of view of Colombo but from the point of view of the ultimate and real conquerors, are crude experiments that are being undertaken in the island, over the question of Eezham Tamils.

The military-state paradigm resulting from the Domino theory that was practised in Southeast Asia and elsewhere in the 1960s and 70s during the cold war environment is once again needed by the West, this time in certain parts of South Asia too.

The rise of China impels urgency in the West to imperceptibly militarise State in the island and to control it, informed diplomats say. Over this, the West and India have stuck a bargain with Colombo in exchange for allowing the Sinhala State to gratify its centuries old genocidal thirst.

All what Wigneswaran was referring to in his speech are actually manifestations of this policy of those who claim them as the ‘international community’.

Unless the ultimate culprits are made to abandon the policy of conceding the genocide of Eezham Tamils to achieve their interests, frustration of generations of Wigneswarans would bring in only empty wails, that too, as long as they have the right to even wail.

The ultimate culprits could always think of alternative ways of achieving their interests by shunning the genocide paradigm and accepting the right to protection liberation of Eezham Tamils.

But they lack ‘appetite,’ as conceded by a failed ‘peace facilitator’ deployed in the deception by the ultimate culprits.

The appetite will never come unless there is challenge.

Wigneswaran delivered the keynote address on Thursday at a ‘national’ conference in Colombo, which was on “post war socio-economic development and constructive engagement with Sri Lankan diaspora.”

“You have correctly identified the context as ‘post-war’ and not ‘post-conflict’, as the political settlement to address the root causes of the conflict is yet to be found,” Wigneswaran in his address commented on the title.

He aptly answered the ‘Sri Lankan’ tag in the conference title in the following words:

“The moment we cast the identity of a “Sri Lankan” in the image of a particular ethnic, linguistic and/or religious group, we alienate all those who do not fit into that category. The flagrant violation of Section 29 of the 1948 Constitution and the establishment of the 1972 Constitution fundamentally altered the basic structure of the Sri Lankan state. It no longer belonged to all its citizens,” Wigneswaran said in his address.

In charting the course of the struggle, in identifying where to address the struggle and in determining what exactly has to be demanded, the diaspora and Tamil Nadu have to carefully read the speech of Wigneswaran, scrapping away certain failed rhetoric such as the ‘full implementation of 13A, to profess which he was installed in politics, commented Tamil activists for alternative politics in the island.

The immediate demand at any international forum should focus on the creation of an interim international mechanism to stop the on-going structural genocide of the nation and territory of Eezham Tamils, the activists said.

Rather than blindly falling victims to further deceptions coming in the name of ‘resolutions’, Tamil Nadu and the diaspora should engage in a proactive struggle. Especially the diaspora articulators should shun the ‘proximity to power’ approach and should work towards kindling the ‘appetite’ of the powers, forcing them to seek alternative paradigms to vouchsafe their interests by conceding to the righteous demands of a long-victimised nation, the activists further said.
