Putting Russian abetment of Tamil genocide in proper context[TamilNet, Monday, 13 January 2020, 23:55 GMT]Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has given an email-interview to Colombo-based Daily News before his visit to the island on Monday. The long-serving Russian FM was stressing a set of principles such as “indivisible security” and “non-interference in the internal affairs” of the states in the Indian Ocean. Mr Lavrov also mentioned “peaceful settlement of disputes and non-use of force or the threat of force”. As far as the Eezham Tamils are concerned, they will never forget the use of lethal weapons deployed by genocidal Sri Lanka’s military. Much of those were supplied by Russia, particularly the OFAB-500 cluster bombs deployed by the SL Air Force and the thermobaric infantry weapons such as RPO-A Shmels used by the SL Army against Eezham Tamils. The scenes of attacks carried out by various MI type choppers and MiG fighter jets that claimed the lives would remain forever in the minds of Eezham Tamils. In 2001, the peace process became a reality as the Tamil Tigers thwarted the ground operation of the SL military, which was code-named Jayasikurui (meaning Victory Assured). The Tigers overran the Elephant Pass garrison, which was described as “impregnable” by the US defence advisors and the Tigers proved their military capability in the attack on Katunayake airbase which was the launchpad for Israeli-built Kfirs and the Russian-made MiGs. After the Jayasikurui debacle, the disgruntled genocidal minds in the SL State hatched a plan to wipe-out the de-facto state of Tamil Eelam through a genocidal onslaught involving lethal weapons in a future scenario. Under Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga’s rule, they went to the extent of deciding to buy thermobaric weapons in December 2000. The 2009 destruction of LTTE’s ability to stand against the SL State was remote-managed mostly by the West and India while the physical genocide went on with destructive weapons from countries like Russia, Pakistan and China. The ultimate bombs that annihilated the existence of Eezham Tamils as a de-facto state in 2009 came from the USA and India in the form of strategic intelligence, guidance, aerial and naval surveillance as well as military counter-insurgency advice. The same powers also waged a political war against the Tamil diaspora. The aim was cutting the lifeline of the Tamil resistance. The US counter-insurgency went to the extent of inviting gullible diaspora sections associated with the LTTE intelligence wing about possible supply of strategic weapons and trapped them all with arrests, and their assets were frozen. At the same time, targeted destruction of LTTE’s vessels in the international waters was carried out with crucial intelligence and guidance from the US military establishment in a 30-month-long secret operation, which was later known as ‘Sagara Balaya’. The most decisive non-lethal weapon, known to date, was an email from May 2009, which was sent by an American consultant, Burns Strider, to the then US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Strider was Hillary’s “spiritual guru”. An email sent by him said: “My take is that the people on the ground both with World Bank and IMF believe the Tigers need to be completely defeated and any collateral damage inflicted on private people by SL govt in process is ok...” It was not Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s efficiency as the SL defence secretary, but his genocidal-intent and the strategic assistance of world powers that led to the genocidal annihilation of the de-facto state of Tamil Eelam in 2009. The role played by the Indian troika at the height of the war along with that of Tokyo Co-Chairs went on record in the SL Parliament as recently as last week by none other than the TNA Leader R. Sampanthan. Lavrov, in his interview to the Daily News, said that the concept of “free and open Indo-Pacific region” promoted by the United States was not a unifying one. The FOIP has destructive potential, he said. “Its true objective is to divide the regional states into “interest groups”, weakening the newly-established regional system of inter-state relations to assert dominance,” he added. Tamils are well aware of the nature of the ‘destructive potential’ of all the powers, including Russia. However, the story-telling from the Russian FM might arouse the interest of extremist Sinhala Buddhist monks, who need to figure out how the future role of US citizen Gotabaya Rajapaksa would be unfolding in their island of genocidal ‘sanctity’. Tamils are not much concerned of lethal arms of Russia anymore, but of the weapons of non-lethal nature continuing to strengthen the Colombo-centric paradigm by all the powers against their existential interest as a nation in the island. Tamils would carefully watch Russia’s role in assisting and abetting “indivisible security” of genocidal Sri Lanka and its continued role of watering down international justice.
