Portending danger for potable water in Jaffna

[Satellite Image Courtesy: Google Earth]The news of re-opening the cement factory at Kaangkeasanthu'rai (KKS) in the Jaffna Peninsula has been received with serious concern by academics and environmentalists from Jaffna. According to them, the factory, when it was functioning earlier, was a health hazard to the densely populated surroundings. It affected horticulture as crops were covered by cement dust. Above all, exploitative quarrying of limestone has already portended the possibility of seawater coming inside and polluting the entire groundwater table of the peninsula.

Civilian found dead in Thenmaradchi

Kodikamam police recovered the body of a family man Thursday morning at Yathali, Thavalai area in Varani, Thenmaradchy and handed it over to Jaffna Teaching hospital. The victim lived within the demarcated boundary of Sri Lanka Army (SLA) High Security Zone, an area where the 52nd SLA division and SLA camps are located.

SLA troopers fail to appear for Court trials in Jaffna

Sri Lanka Army (SLA) personnel, involved either as the accused or witness in cases of abductions, killings and other such criminal allegations, fail to appear for the scheduled trials in the courts in Jaffna peninsula, causing numerous indefinite postponements of the cases, legal society sources in Jaffna said. The SLA Commander will act in consultation with the Attorney General, in case Magistrates handling such cases resort to punitive measures, SLA legal sources said.

2 students, family man seek protection with Jaffna HRC

An eighteen year old student from Karaveddy, Vadamaradchy and another 16 year old student from Pokatti, Kodikamam in Thenmaradchy sought protection with Human Rights Commission (HRC) Jaffna office Tuesday along with a young family man from Chavakacheri in Thenmaradchy, all fearing death from Sri Lanka Army (SLA) troopers and SLA-backed paramilitaries, according to sources in Jaffna. With the Jaffna magistrate have taken leave of absence, HRC officials are facing technical problems in arranging protective custody in Jaffna prisons, civil society sources in Jaffna said.

SLA asks court to transfer Chemmani case to Anuradhapura

Sri Lanka Army (SLA) Commander, Wednesday and Thursday filed two petitions in the Sri Lanka's Court of Appeal asking not to allow the inquiry into the Chemmani graveyard massacre and other related Habeas Corpus applications to be held in Jaffna Magistrate's Court and to transfer those cases to Anuradhapura court for further hearing, legal sources in Jaffna said.

Abducted undergrad released after torture in Chavakachcheri

A 23-year-old final year arts faculty student of Jaffna University, abducted by alleged Military Intelligence operatives of the Sri Lanka Army, stationed at Post Office Road in Chavakachchaeri was released Monday after severe torture for three days. The tortured victim, Vijayarajah Vijayarooban, was abducted Friday at a private tuition centre located near the A9 road inside the SLA militarized High Security Zone in Chavakacheri town where he was working as a part time teacher.

SLA disrupts Hindu festival in Thenmaradchy

The annual Hindu celebrations at the historical Panrithalaichi Amman Temple in Manthuvil along Kanagampuliyady Junction- Jaffna Point Pedro road in Putur area in Thenmaradchy was disrupted when Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldiers conducted a cordon and search operation Moday morning, civil society sources said. Thousands of disappointed devotees who thronged the area were prevented from proceeding towards the temple.

Chavakacheri courts orders action against SLA officers

In a historic ruling, Chavakacheri courts, said Thursday that there is sufficient evidence of direct involvement of Sri Lanka Army (SLA) officers in the disappearance of a number of youths in Thenmaradchchy area in 1996, and issued orders that further action be taken by Jaffna High Courts, legal sources in Jaffna said. The case against the accused officers of SLA was being heard at Chavakacheri courts since Monday, 12 February.

Two shot dead in Thenamradchi

Unidentified armed men on a motor cycle chased a youth and shot him dead Tuesday around 9:30 a.m as he was returning from Kodikamam town to Kachchai along the road behind Kodikamam police station in Thenmaradchi. Meanwhile, unknown gunmen shot dead the owner driving his tractor along the Navatkuli-Kerativu road, one hundred metres from the Navatkuli Sri Lanka Army (SLA) camp in Thenmaradchi, around 1:30 p.m Tuesday.

Two youths shot dead in Chavakacheri

Two unidentified gun men pretending as customers entered a meat stall in Chavakacheri Modern public market Monday around 10:00 a.m. and shot rapidly with pistols killing an employee on the spot and seriously injuring another employee caught in the firing. The injured youth, while being rushed to Jaffna Teaching hospital in an ambulance, succumbed to his wounds on the way, at Navatkuli.

2 shot, injured in Jaffna

Sri Lanka Army (SLA) troopers of the field motorcycle unit opened fire on a young farmer around 4:00 p.m Wednesday at Mirusuvil in Thenmaradchi seriously injuring him, sources in Mirusuvil said. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) marines shot and seriously injured a man driving a tractor in Ward 4 at Velanai east around 3:00 p.m Wednesday allegedly for not giving way to the SLN marines who were on a motorcycle behind the tractor. The SLN, however, said that the firing was a warning shot and was not intended to harm the driver.

SLA, LTTE exchange mortar fire near Muhamalai FDL

Two shells fell within the SLA camp at Usan located behind the Forward Defence Line (FDL) positions, residents said. A shell fired by the Liberation Tigers exploded in areas close to Usan and Mirusuvil Camps of the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) Sunday, causing minor injuries to two civilians, sources close to SLA said

SLA soldier, 3 civilians killed, 20 injured in Jaffna bomb explosions

Three civilians, including an elderly woman was killed and twenty civilians injured, seven seriously, in two incidents of bomb explosions in Chavakachcheri and Manipay, Tuesday morning, sources in Jaffna said. A Sri Lanka Army soldier succumbed to his wounds and three other troopers were wounded in Chavakachcheri explosion, SLA sources in Jaffna said. Tension prevails in Jaffna after the suspicious bomb attacks inflicting civilian casualties during the rush hours near Chavakachcheri New Market and in Manipay.

Curfew in Thenmaradchi continues

The indefinite extension of Sri Lanka Army (SLA) curfew on Thenmaradchi from Thursday 9:00 p.m continued for more than 24 hours, causing untold difficulties to the residents of the area, confining them indoors, sources from Chavakacheri said. There had been no clashes or extraordinary circumstances calling for search operation in the area where the curfew is being imposed by the SLA, the sources added.

8 white van abductions in Jaffna in 5 days

Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldiers and collaborating paramilitaries have abducted eight youths, including two students, in the Jaffna district between 20th and 25th December, according to complaints filed by the relatives with the Jaffna Human Rights Commission (HRC), civil society sources in Jaffna said. SLA troops arrive in Buffel armoured cars with paramilitaries in white vans, and abductions take place either on streets in broad day light or at the victims' houses during night, the relatives of those abducted said.

Three youths missing since Friday in Jaffna

Three youths who left their homes Friday morning to purchase at Chavakacheri in Thenmaradchi were reported missing from Friday by their parents at the Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission (SLHRC) Jaffna office Monday. One of the youths was on his motor cycle while the other two went riding bicycles and all three had to pass Chemani area between Chavakacheri and Jaffna, close to the Sri Lanka Army(SLA) camp, where two months ago many youths had mysteriously disappeared, the parents said.

Body with stab wounds found in Mirusuvil

The body of a family man with stab wounds was found inside his house at Mirusuvil north, in an area close to the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) Front Defence Line (FDL) in Thenmaradchi north, by Kodikamam Police on information given by the dead man's neighbours. A motorcycle and another vehicle of the dead man had been stolen by the killers, the neighbours said.

Garage owner shot dead in Chavakacheri

Owner of a vehicle repair facility in Dutch Road, Chavakacheri in Thenmaradchy district was shot dead by two gunmen riding in a motorbike at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, sources said. The body has been transferred to Jaffna Teaching Hospital for postmortem examinations.
