Jayalalithaa demands nullification of Indo-Lanka IMBL agreement

Ms. J. JayalalithaaA permanent solution to resolve the Tamil Nadu fishermen's issue lies only in the retrieval of Katchatheevu islet, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Ms Jayalalithaa reiterated in a letter to Indian Prime Minister on Thursday. “The unconstitutional Indo-Sri Lankan Agreements of 1974 and 1976 should be nullified and the traditional rights of our fishermen to fish in the Palk Bay restored,” she told Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in her letter. “Hence, the Government of India should not treat the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) with Sri Lanka as a settled question as the constitutionality of the 1974 and 1976 agreements have been challenged on extremely valid and legal grounds by me in my personal capacity and also by the Government of Tamil Nadu in the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India.”

Land acquisition by occupying military challenged in Sri Lanka Courts

Following a writ-application filed at the Sri Lankan Court of Appeal by 1,474 Eezham Tamils owning lands in Valikaamam North on 14 May, which was an initiative taken by Colombo-based lawyers, including those belonging to the Tamil National Alliance, a group of lawyers based in Jaffna have filed legal action in Sri Lankan Supreme Court on 22 May, challenging the publication of the Section 2 notice to acquire lands from the owners in Valikaamam North. In the meantime, the commander of the occupying SL military in Jaffna, Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe, who recently faced questions from the visiting United Nations representatives on the acquisition of lands in the former High Security Zone (HSZ), was attempting to play down the scale of the Sinhala militarization by hiding the extent of land acquisition outside the Valikaamam North area.

Indian envoy called on SLA commander to receive ‘best wishes’

0The outgoing High Commissioner and designated Secretary-East of New Delhi Establishment’s Ministry of External Affairs, Ashok K. Kantha, called on genocidal Sri Lanka’s military commander occupying Jaffna, Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe, at Palaali on Monday. The “ SF-J Commander extended his sincere wishes to the outgoing Indian High Commissioner when he called on Maj. Gen. Hathurusinghe on Monday (06) at his official residence in Palaly,” reiterated SL military-run website in Jaffna, in addition to saying “Hathurusinghe wished all the best” to the Indian envoy leaving in a few days. Local media was not permitted to cover events related to the envoy’s visit.

India signs MoU with Colombo to ‘rehabilitate’ KKS harbour

CaFFE: Thousands in Ki'linochchi, Mullaiththeevu to be disenfranchised

After a fact finding mission to the North, Campaign for Free and Faie Elections (CaFFE), an election watchdog, said that in Ki'linochchi only 16 out of the 96 Kiraama Chevakar (GS) Divisions have received voter registration forms, and in Mullaiththeevu none of the 127 divisions have been distributed with registration forms. CAFFE statement further adds that election officials have written off " 40,000+" IDPs still living in camps. Camp resident IDPs are widely believed to exceed 80,000.

27 Saiva temples, monuments affected by planned road widening, ACHC complains

All Ceylon Hindu Congress (ACHC) expressed deep concern over Sri Lanka's planned widening of the Jaffna-Kankesanthurai high way from Jaffna town to KKS as the plan would lead to the destruction and desecration of twenty seven Saiva temples and several historical cultural monuments along both sides of the highway, sources in Jaffna said. Officials of ACHC have protested the planned road upgrade to Northern Provincial Governor G.A. Chandrasiri.

Rajapakse leading by one million votes in 80 electorates with 2.9 million votes

The incumbent Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa has polled 2,960.507 (60.27%) votes and General (retd) Sarath Fonseka, common opposition candidate received 1,690,990 (37.99%) votes in eighty of a total of 160 electorates so far results announced. Mahinda Rajapakse is leading by 1, 097, 034 votes.

Sri Lanka Navy plants explosives in Historic Waters

Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) has planted underwater mines between Kachchatheevu and Neduntheevu (Delft Island) endangering the lives of Tamil Nadu fishermen according to reports in the Indian media Wednesday. Consequently, 12 fishermen from Rameswaram (Raameasvaram) in Tamil Nadu were taken into custody by the SLN Monday when they attempted to exercise their traditional fishing rights in Kachchatheevu. "In a shameless show of solidarity with the SLN which has violated the international convention, the Indian Navy has also arrested 60 fishermen from Rameswaram in the last two days," said a fishermen society representative in Rameswaram.

Sri Lanka Navy arrests 97 Tamil Nadu fishermen

Sri Lankan Navy on Friday night arrested 97 Tamil Nadu fishermen along with 17 fishing trawlers allegedly off Kankesanthurai seas, according to police sources in Jaffna. Meanwhile, thousands of fishermen in Rameasvaram and Naakappaddinam in Tamil Nadu state in India abstained from fishing Saturday demanding the state government to trace the whereabouts of the fishermen who had gone missing in the sea. This is the first time that Sri Lankan Navy has arrested a large number of Indian fishermen, sources in Jaffna said.

Sri Lankan military officials meet in Palaali

A defence team comprising high level officials of the Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF), Sri Lanka Army (SLA) and Sri Lanka Navy (SLN), were flown to Palaali airbase amid tight security Tuesday morning for an assessment of the air attack carried out by the Tigers on the High Security Zone Palaali garrison in Jaffna. A number of bombs dropped by the LTTE aircrafts had hit the military installations including the ammunition stores and camps along Kadduvan - Kankesanthurai (KKS) Road and in areas surrounding Mayiliddi harbour, according to a military official who did not wished to be named.

Backlog of parcels shipped to Jaffna

The Cargo vessel "Induruwa", carrying nearly 6000 parcels lying in backlog in Trincomalee post office since January, sailed Tuesday evening to Kankesanthurai harbour in Jaffna peninsula, Department of Postal Services (DPS) said. Only parcels containing medicine, weighing up to one kg, would be accepted to Jaffna district, according to an announcement by DPS.

Detained youth's family seeks protection at HRC Jaffna

Parents and two younger brothers of a youth detained at Kankesanthurai Special Police detention camp sought protection with Human Rights Commission (HRC) in Jaffna Tuesday. The HRC, however, took steps to place only the 16 year old brother in the protective custody of Jaffna prison. Parents and the other brother of the detained youth had to return home in Kachai, where the youth was arrested by Sri Lanka Army (SLA) troopers Friday.

Jaffna bus service reduced due to lack of spares

The ship 'Ruhuna', the latest ship arriving at Jaffna, was taken to Kankesanthurai harbour, used exclusively by Sri Lanka Navy (SLN), first unloaded the goods brought for the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) and the SLN.

Peoples' Committee urges opening of western sea-route to Jaffna

Closure of A9-highway has seriously affected the lives of the peninsula residents, the Bishop said in a press meet held by the Peoples' Committee for Peace and Goodwill (PCPG) Sunday around 3:00 p.m at the Jaffna Bishop House.

Mail overflows Trinco storage, lies outside in open

Trincomalee postal department official await the arrival of a cargo vessel "Mercs Yala" from Kankesanthurai to transport thousands of mailbags and parcels to Jaffna district, as the attempt to ship the mail before Sunday failed, sources in Trincomalee said. The backlog has been lying in Trincomalee general post office since January 13 without any vessel being assigned to take them to Jaffna, and bags overflowing the storage are now left in the open space outside the building, sources said.

SLN fortifies Point Pedro harbour area

Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) is constructing a large guard post at Point Pedro Munai area near the light house with the aim to reopen Point Pedro harbour which remains closed after the attack on 'City of Liverpool' ship. Myliddy waterfront serves as a temporary unloading wharf but is incapable of handling many vessels simultaneously. The new SLN guard post, while guarding ships unloading at Point Pedro harbour, is also meant to obstruct any Sea Tiger attacks.
