Supreme Court to inquire FR petition by IDP family against illegal detention

Sri Lanka’s Supreme Court Thursday granted leave to proceed with the fundamental rights violation petition filed on behalf of members of one family who are detained in an Internally Displaced Persons’ Camp (IDP Camp) in Vavuniya against their wishes, and listed the case for hearing on November 12, legal sources in Colombo said. The bench comprised Justices Nihal Gamini Amaratunge and Chandra Ekanayake. The petition alleged infringement of plaintiffs' fundamental rights to equality, equal protection of the law, as well as their right to the freedom of movement and of choosing their residence within Sri Lanka.

2 civilians abducted, 4 seek protection with Jaffna HRC

Civilian found dead in Thenmaradchi

Kodikamam police recovered the body of a family man Thursday morning at Yathali, Thavalai area in Varani, Thenmaradchy and handed it over to Jaffna Teaching hospital. The victim lived within the demarcated boundary of Sri Lanka Army (SLA) High Security Zone, an area where the 52nd SLA division and SLA camps are located.

2 students, family man seek protection with Jaffna HRC

An eighteen year old student from Karaveddy, Vadamaradchy and another 16 year old student from Pokatti, Kodikamam in Thenmaradchy sought protection with Human Rights Commission (HRC) Jaffna office Tuesday along with a young family man from Chavakacheri in Thenmaradchy, all fearing death from Sri Lanka Army (SLA) troopers and SLA-backed paramilitaries, according to sources in Jaffna. With the Jaffna magistrate have taken leave of absence, HRC officials are facing technical problems in arranging protective custody in Jaffna prisons, civil society sources in Jaffna said.

Detained youth's family seeks protection at HRC Jaffna

Parents and two younger brothers of a youth detained at Kankesanthurai Special Police detention camp sought protection with Human Rights Commission (HRC) in Jaffna Tuesday. The HRC, however, took steps to place only the 16 year old brother in the protective custody of Jaffna prison. Parents and the other brother of the detained youth had to return home in Kachai, where the youth was arrested by Sri Lanka Army (SLA) troopers Friday.

Body with torture marks, gunshot wounds found in Manthuvil

The naked body of a youth, bound in barbed wire, with several gunshot wounds and deep, extensive torture marks, was discovered inside bush jungles in an isolated area near Kerudavil, Manthuvil in Thenmaradchy Sunday morning at 9:00 a.m. by local residents, sources in Jaffna said. The residents informed the district Grama Sevakar who then informed the Chavakachcheri Police who recovered the body, according to sources.

Supreme Court rejects Jaffna youth's FR petition

SLA introduces pass system to travel out of Jaffna

The Sri Lanka Army (SLA) high command in Jaffna said it requires all persons wishing to leave Jaffna district to provide a surety to stand guarantee for the return of the applicant as an additional requirement to obtain a pass to travel out of the distriict. The travellers are asked to submit applications to the area SLA official through the Village Officer and the Divisional Secretary. Civil society sources expressed concern over the new regulations restricting the freedom of movement, and urged Rights groups to bring pressure on Colombo to stop the deteriorating human rights situation in Northeast.

SLA removes remains of bodies, accuse Mulli residents

Ariyanayagam and the police Tuesday evening, for the two partly burnt corpses discovered by Mulli residents in a mangrove shrub jungle Monday, ended in failure, sources in Jaffna said. Military boot tracks on the marshy ground were found in the area and residents allege that the burnt corpses have been removed Monday night by the troopers who the villagers accuse of dumping the body there.

19 SLA troopers injured in Jaffna

3 youths seek safety with Jaffna Rights Body

The officials are making arrangements for the three youths to be produced at Jaffna courts through Jaffna police, HRC sources said.

LTTE shells hit Manthuvil Base

Two shells fell inside the Base and one outside it. Ambulance was seen rushing out of the Base towards Palaly Military Hospital following the attack, civilians of the area said.

Relative of murdered undergrad shot dead in Jaffna

Man shot dead in Madduvil
