Fonseka begins fast as military prevents attending parliament

Democratic National Alliance Parliamentarian Sarath Fonseka Wednesday morning began an indefinite fast in the Navy Headquarters where he is being detained since his arrest after the defeat in January presidential election, as the military forced him to attend the second court martial hearing fixed on Wednesday. He was prevented from leaving the Navy Headquarters to parliament on Wednesday morning.

Court turns down CID application to record Fonseka statement

Colombo Chief Magistrate Monday turned down an application tendered by the Criminal Investigation Department (C.I.D) of Sri Lanka Police seeking permission of the court to record a statement from retired General Sarath Fonseka over a statement that latter had given to a Sunday English weekly regarding the killing of surrendering LTTE cadres at the last stage of the war, legal sources said.

The Democratic National Alliance (DNA) led by the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) Tuesday decided to oppose the extension of the State of Emergency when the government tables a motion seeking it for another month 4 May in parliament, sources in Colombo said. DNA parliamentary group met Tuesday with General Sarath Fonseka in the chair at the parliamentary complex and discussed the strategy that is to be adopted in parliament by the DNA when its meets next week.

The Petitioners have cited DIG Nandana Manasinghe of the CID, OIC of the Homagama Police, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mahinda Balasuriya.

Chamal Rajapakse new Speaker, Fonseka attends parliament

The first session of the seventh parliament elected in the April 8 general election was inaugurated Thursday with all new parliamentarians were sworn in the morning. Eldest brother of Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa, Mr. Chamal Rajapaksa was elected new Speaker of the parliament. Former Commander of the Sri Lanka Army General (retd.)
