3 corpses of women washed ashore in Nainaatheevu

Three corpses of women in highly decomposed state were found washed ashore Tuesday in Nainaatheevu, an islet of Jaffna, by local residents who informed Oorkaavattu'rai (Kayts) police. Ms. Joy Mahadeva, Oorkaavattu'rai magistrate, visited the place in Nainaatheevu where the corpses lay and held the inquest into the deaths. She directed the police to hand over the corpses to Jaffna Teaching Hospital (JTH) mortuary for identification.

Building contractor shot dead in the islets of Jaffna

Unidentified gunmen alleged to be Tamil paramilitary persons following a building contrator on motor cycle shot and killed him Saturday around 5:30 p.m at Charava'nai Kaa'li Koayiladi in Veala’nai, in the islets of Jaffna, sources in Oorkaavattu’rai (Kayts) said. The victim’s two brothers who had been combatants in militant groups had died in the past, the sources added.

Woman’s corpse washed ashore in Nedunththeevu

Nedunththeevu (Delft) police recovered the corpse of a woman without any clothes on, Friday, being informed by a fisherman who had found the corpse on the beach in Ward 4 area in Nedunththeevu, an islet of Jaffna. Oorkaavttu’rai (Kayts) magistrate, Ms. Joy Mahatheva, conducted the inquest into the death at the site where the corpse was found and directed the police to hand the body to Jaffna Teaching Hospital mortuary for post mortem examination and identification to be held, Oorkaavattu’rai police said.

One hundred and seventeen fisheries societies in Jaffna peninsula have been disabled to continue their development activities due to the continuing fishing ban and restrictions imposed by Sri Lanka Army (SLA) and Sri Lanka Navy (SLN), President of Jaffna Peninsula Fisheries Societies Unions’ Federation, S. Thavaratnam expressed concern. The fisheries societies entirely dependent on membership subscription to carry on their activities are forced into inactivity, he added.

Large scale SLA cordon, search in Vadamaraadchi

Sri Lanka Army (SLA) in Jaffna peninsula launched large scale cordon and search operations Friday morning till evening in areas of Vadamaraadchi including Uduppiddi and Valveddiththu'rai, residents of Vadamaraadchi said. Vehicular traffic on main roads were blocked with SLA Buffel armoured personnel carriers and battle tanks from Palaali military complex, and the people were subjected to intensive search. The escalation of small scale attacks on SLA in the peninsula in recent times have triggered this intensified search, according to informed sources.

Young SLN recruit commits suicide in Jaffna

A 23-year-old Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) recruit, enlisted six months ago, shot himself to death Wednesday night at Allaippiddi, in the islets of Jaffna. The young recruit left a letter saying that he was deceived by his recruiters and brought to the north and that he was not granted leave to go home.

Northern Bar Association of Sri Lanka (NBSL) decided in its Saturday meeting in Jaffna to launch a boycott of all Courts of Law in the Jaffna peninsula from 2 May until the section allocated for the use of their members in the newly opened judicial complex is made available, Ms. Shantha Abimannasingam, Zonal Vice President of NBSL said. Failure of any constructive measure to be taken despite NBSL discussions on this issue with the Attorney General and key officials of the Justice Ministry has forced us to resort to boycott, she added.

SLA occupation of Madu, triggers fears of renewed Sinhalicisation

The Madu Road junction located on Mannaar-Madawachchi Road, which branches off the main route to Madu shrine, situated in the middle of traditional Tamil area, became the center of a Sinhala settlement in the 1970s. The Sri Lanka Government had the agenda of transforming the area into a full-fledged Sinhala colony, by using the lands of a cashew farm between the Madu Shrine and the junction. However, the settlement was later abandoned, fearing repercussions following large-scale massacre and arson committed by the Sri Lanka Army in December 1984 after a landmine blast. The spectre of a Sinhalicised Madu area has now become a dangerous new reality with SLA's occupation of Madu shrine.

ADB funds reconstruction of bridges in Jaffna

Asian Development Bank (ADB) has allocated Rs.325m to reconstruct Ponnaalai Bridge that connects Kaarainakar in the islets and Jaffna peninsula, and initial reconstruction work is already in progress, Jaffna Government Agent (GA), K. Ganesh said. ADB has also consented to fund building the Vallai Bridge between Vadamaraadchi and Jaffna that had been destroyed in Sri Lanka Army (SLA) offensive, Jaffna Secretariat sources said.

SLN limits transport of fish, coconuts from Delft to Jaffna

Sri Lanka Navy (SLN), stationed in the islets of Jaffna, has imposed restrictions on Neduntheevu (Delft) residents carrying essential goods in Kumuthini passenger ferry boat, affected residents said. Neduntheevu residents have protested against the SLN pointing out that Kumuthini is the only passenger service plying between Kurikaaduvaan in Pungudutheevu and Neduntheevu, and their economic well-being will be affected by the new restrictions. Kumuthini, which is known for the SLN massacre of passengers in May 1985, is more than 30 years old, and often breaks down.

SLA moves weapons, explosives to Northern FDLs
