Colombo snaps outside communication with Vanni

Sri Lankan Telecommunication Department has cut off the telephone numbers with +9421228 format (Ki'linochchi lines) for the last few days, disabling the only available mode of communication to the outside world from Vanni at a time when more than 100,000 civilians have displaced in Ki'inochchi and Mullaiththeevu districts due to the Sri Lanka Army offensive. Fundamental services such as hospitals, civil services and media dependent on telephone communication have been severely affected, according to civil sources in Ki'linochchi.

LTTE to hand over dead body of SLA DPU soldier

SLA intruder of LRRP (DPU) killed in VanniLTTE officials in Ki'inochchi on Monday said a unit of the Peoples Force of Liberation Tigers of Tamileelam (PF-LTTE) had recovered the dead body of a Sri Lanka Army Long Range Reconnaissance Patrol (LRRP) soldier who was killed following the recent attack in Kokkaavil where Deputy Planning Director of Poonakari Divisional Secretariat, Santhalingam Vimalakumar, was slain in a Claymore attack on Friday. Meanwhile, four of the thirty dead bodies were handed over to the LTTE through the ICRC by the SLA, were not identified as belonging to LTTE fighters, the Tigers said.

SLA shelling targets Theavanpiddi, civilian killed

A civilian was killed and two wounded Sunday when Sri Lanka Army (SLA) launched artillery and mortar barrage as displaced civilians were engaged in transporting their movable properties at Thevanpiddi, one of the topmost localities of Mannaar district. The SLA launched a day-long intense shelling barrage from 7:00 a.m. targeting Theavanpiddi where the statue of Our Lady of Madu was placed for the past 12 weeks. The shrine was taken on an ambulance by the Church authorities via Omanthai to Mannaar Bishop's House on Friday.

Homage paid to slain Vimalakumar in Ki'linochchi

0Homage to Santhalingam Vimalakumar, Deputy Planning Director of Poonakari division in Ki'linochchi District Secretariat killed Friday morning in a DPU Claymore attack at Kokkaavil in Oddisuddaan was paid in an event held Friday in the conference room in Ki'linochchi Secretariat presided by S. Regi Aloysius, the head of Ki'linochchi Secretariat Welfare Association. Government Administrative officials, Medical Officers, Education Department officers and a large number of people took part in the event paying their last respects to the remains of Vimalakumar.

Development official killed in DPU Claymore attack

0Deputy Planning Director of Poonakari (Pooneryn) division and a development official at Ki'iinochchi District Secretariat, Santhalingam Vimalakumar, 33, was killed Friday morning following a Claymore attack that targeted his motorbike at Kokkaavil in Oddisuddaan. Mr. Vimalakumar was on his way to Vavuniyaa on official engagement while he was attacked, according to officials at the District Secretariat.

SLAF attacks paddy fields again, civilian wounded

0A 24-year-old man, father of two, was wounded Tuesday morning when two Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) bombers attacked Kugnchup-paranthan and the adjacent paddy fields along Paranthan - Poonakari (Pooneryn) road. TamilNet correspondent who visited the attack site said that the bombardment has caused extensive damage to the agricultural lands in the 5th canal. The road was also damaged in the attack. The SLAF bombers came again in the afternoon and attacked the same area with deep bombs leaving large craters.

DS officials in Vanni seek guarantees for their safety

Expressing fear of being targeted by claymore attacks while serving the civilians in Vanni, two Divisional Secretaries (AGAs) presently working in Mullaiththeevu and Ki'linochchi districts have requested the Government Agents (GAs) of the two districts to be transferred from their present postings. The two divisional secretaries while condemning the killing of their colleague Nanthakumar have pointed out that they face severe hardships in providing services for the public in their administrative areas and have requested the Government Agents of the two districts to ensure their safety.

3 civilians wounded in DPU Claymore attack on MPCS lorry

0Three civilians including the driver of a lorry loaded with supplies to the Cooperative Society in Poonakari (Pooneryn) from Vavuniyaa, was attacked by a Deep Penetration Unit of the Sri Lanka Army in the early hours of Tuesday at 1:30 a.m. at Aanaivizhunthaan on Akkaraayan - Vanneari Road. The lorry, carrying essential supplies worth 2.3 million Sri Lankan Rupees to the Poonakari Multi Purpose Cooperative Society (MPCS), which serves to the Internally Displaced People from Poonakari and Mannaar, was destroyed in the attack, according to the General Manager of the Poonakari MPCS, T. Ratnakumar, told TamilNet.

A 24-year-old father of a child was killed Tuesday in Poonakari (Pooneryn) at Ellaikkal-ku'lam when Sri Lanka Army (SLA) launched artillery attack on the residential area. A 16-year-old student of Chellaiatheevu School was wounded in the attack and admitted to Muzhangkaavil hospital. The artillery barrage lasted for 10 minutes from 10:10 till 10:20 a.m.

SLAF bombers struck Poonakari Tuesday in three sorties, the sources added.

Details of damage or casualties in the air strike are not known. In an earlier raid on 22 February on civilian settlements in Poonakari region eight civilians were killed.

LTTE, SLA clash in Jaffna lagoon

A clash between Sri Lanka Army (SLA) and Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) erupted Tuesday around 7:45 a.m. in Jaffna lagoon near Kozhumpuththu'rai when SLA troops in their Forward Defence Line positions along the lagoon shore attacked Sea Tiger patrol boats, sources in Jaffna said. LTTE retaliated from their vessels and the fighting lasted for nearly fifteen minutes, the sources said.

A 68-year-old woman, one of 12 civilians being treated for injuries they sustained in the indiscriminate air attack carried out by the Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) Friday in Kiraagnchi in the Poonakari (Pooneryn) division, succumbed to her injuries Saturday night. Nine civilians, including five women and 3 children, were killed. 11 civilians, including four children are being treated for their injuries.

0Eight civilians including a 6-month-old infant, a 4-year-old boy, their mother, a 8-year-old girl and an English teacher were killed, 14 including four children and another teacher were wounded in a Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) aerial bombardment of a civilian settlement at Kiraagnchi in the Poonakari division of Ki'linochchi district Friday at 8:10 a.m. Three houses were fully destroyed and many houses have sustained damage in the indiscriminate aerial bombardment in which more than 20 bombs were dropped by four bombers. Meanwhile, Sri Lankan ministry of defence in Colombo claimed that the SLAF had attacked "an inland sea tiger base" at Kiraagnchi.

Medical staff in Vanni protest against DPU Claymore attacks on ambulances

0More than 700 medical staff in Vanni, including doctors, nurses, technical staff, midwives and minor staff from K'ilinochchi and Mullaiththeevu districts, Thursday morning staged a protest against targeted Claymore attacks by the Sri Lanka Army Deep Penetration Unit (DPU) on ambulances and humanitarian vehicles. In August last year, a DPU attack on the ambulance of Nedungkea'ni claimed the lives of the doctor of Nedungkea'ni hospital, his wife, two nurses and the driver of the ambulance. On 25 November, the driver of the ambulance of Muzhangkaavil hospital was seriously wounded in a Claymore attack at Mudkompan in Poonakari (Pooneryn).

Claymore attack kills SLA trooper, injures 2 in Vadamaraadchchi

Unidentified persons triggered a Claymore device Saturday around 8:00 p.m at Oo’ra’ni area in Valveddiththu’rai killing one Sri Lanka Army (SLA) trooper and seriously injuring two in an attack on a convoy of SLA vehicles passing through. The device, hidden along the route to Palaali SLA Head Quarters through Valvai and Achchuveali near an SLA camp, was activated by the attackers.
