Police sergeant among burglars killed in Puththa'lam

One of the three burglars killed in the road accident that took place Saturday morning at Mangala Eliya along Puththa'lam-Chilaw road has been identified as a police sergeant who was in duty at the time of the incident. The police recovered a set of police uniforms, Jewellery worth about one million rupees, rifles, and swords from the vehicle which ran off the road and hit a culvert, media sources said.

Accident kills 3 robbery suspects with police uniforms

Three members of a gang that had been engaged in robbery were killed and five others were injured when the vehicle they were travelling in ran off the road at Mangala Wewa along Puththalam-Chilaw highway Saturday early morning. Police recovered a part of the loot along with a set of police uniforms from the damaged vehicle, media sources said.

Attacks on SLRC employees aim to create fear psychosis - FMM

Sri Lanka state-owned Rupavahini Cooperation (SLRC) employees who participated and covered a spontaneous protest on 27 December when Mervy Silva, the SL Minister of Labour was retaliated when he reportedly went amok on a news editor, have been systematically subjected to threats and attacks, media circles in Colombo said. On Wednesday, an attacker armed with a razor knife cut the librarian of the SLRC, Ranjani Aluthge, twice from behind injuring her while she was on her way to home from the SLRC in a public bus. "This is the fourth incident of attacks and attempted attacks on SLRC journalists and media workers that has taken place recently," Colombo based Free Media Movement said.

SLRC journalists' lives under threat from SL Minister's goons- FMM

Free Media Movement (FMM), a media rights watchdog in Colombo, in a press release issued Thursday said, four confirmed incidents have been reported of journalists attached to Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation (SLRC) either being assaulted or threatened by thugs working for Sri Lanka's Minister of Labor Mervyn Silva, after the staff video taped Mr Silva attempting to wreck havoc inside SLRC on 27 December. "Not a single thug who accompanied MP Mervyn Silva has been brought to book. Not a single investigation or disciplinary hearing on MP Mervyn Silva has been conducted," the FMM said in the release.

Appalling rights violations no bar to contain rebellion- RSF

"The government and the military have intensified the war against the Tamil Tigers and President Mahinda Rajapakse has sworn to stamp out the rebellion, at the price of appalling human rights violations if necessary. Both the Sinhala and English-language press came under even greater pressure from the authorities in 2007. On their side, the Tamil Tigers allow no dissident voices in the areas they control," said Reporters Sans Frontiers (RSF) in the annual report issued Wednesday. "Some ministers behave like gang leaders," the report further described the deteriorating state of governance in Sri Lanka.

Woman gang raped in Vadamaraadchi

Armed men in military uniform abducted a woman Saturday early morning from her house in Imaiyaa’nan close to the Jaffna-Point Pedro road at in Vadamaraadchi, Jaffna, and gang raped her in a shrub land near her house, according to a Women Welfare volunteer Organization. The woman was found lying unconscious by relatives, and was rushed to Manthikai hospital first and later transferred to Jaffna Teaching hospital for further treatment, sources in Jaffna said.

Masked men burn Sunday Leader printing press

A twelve-member group of masked men, Wednesday early morning around 2:15 forcibly entered the printing press of the English weekly papers Sunday Leader, Morning Leader and Irudina Sinhala weekly and set fire damaging printing machines and copies of newspapers printed ready for distribution. The Free Media Movement (FMM), a Colombo based media watch dog, condemning the act, noted that the Morning Leader editor has been very critical of Asia Tribune website, which according to the editor, works hand in hand with the paramilitary Pillayaan Group. The paper, which has been critical of the government, was scheduled to reveal details of horse-trading to buy off parliamentarians, this week.

Rape by Sri Lankan troops resurfaces – in Haiti

The United Nations has asked Sri Lanka to prosecute ‘to the fullest extent of the law’ 108 Sri Lankan soldiers with the UN peacekeeping mission in Haiti for sexual exploitation and sexual abuse of minors, including prostitution, the Sunday Times reported. The number is one of the biggest single withdrawal of soldiers from a UN peacekeeping mission. During the conflict numerous local and international NGOs protested both frequent rapes by security forces and the climate of impunity in which they occur.

Abducted youth in Ragama left blindfolded in Dambulla

Kanthasamy Kamaladas, 29, abducted by unidentified persons on Wednesday morning at Ragama railway station appeared at the Ragama police station Monday morning, sources in Colombo said. Kamaladas said he was dropped by the abductors in a jungle area in Dambulla in Kandy district on Sunday night blind-folded, but managed to obtain help from a lorry driver to travel back to Ragama.
