SLA camp closes segment of Point Pedro-Kodikaamam road

Sri Lanka Army (SLA) has constructed a large base for its 52nd division enclosing a stretch of the Point Pedro-Kodikaamam road at Va’ra’ni, directing the public to use a sandy path through the coconut grove that runs parallel to the section of the main road closed to the public. Water-logged bypass road has become impassable to traffic, and is likely to force Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) and private bus owners to suspend services in the next few days, sources in Jaffna said.

SLA, LTTE clashes continue in Northern Front

Clashes between Sri Lanka Army (SLA) and Liberation Tigers of Tamileelam (LTTE) erupted again Wednesday around 4:00 a.m. along Ki'laali and Mukamaalai Front Defence Lines (FDL) and lasted till 10:00 a.m. Artillery duels raged while LTTE launched shells fell and exploded in SLA High Security Zone in Mirusuvil and Usan in Thenmaraadchi where many SLA bases and camps are located. Details of casualties or injuries are not available.

Artillery duel in Northern Front, SLA closes roads to transport casualties in Jaffna

Clashes between Sri Lanka Army (SLA) and Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) which began with an SLA offensive advance through Ki’aali Tuesday around 1:20 a.m continued through the day with artillery duels and gunfire exchanges, sources in Jaffna said. Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) helicopters were seen engaged in transporting casualties and injured soldiers while Kandy road and Palaali road were blocked several times during the day enabling ambulances to carry the dead and injured to Palaali SLA hospital. The SLA has suffered considerable loss of lives and injuries to many, sources close to SLA said.

Themaraadchi residents flee shelling

Residents of Mirusuvil and Usan areas in Thenmaraadchi fled from their houses when shells fired by Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) targeting the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) bases in the said areas fell and exploded, Tuesday around 5:00 a.m, according to civil sources in the area. The shelling began following the Tuesday clashes between the SLA and the LTTE.

SLA soldier’s body recovered from well in Thenmaraadchi

Meanwhile, the wife of a teacher from Vadamaraadchi has reported her husband missing since 8 December with HRC Jaffna office.

Body of mentally ill man recovered from Jaffna well

Koapaay police recovered Wednesday the body of a mental patient who went missing from Jaffna Teaching Hospital (JTH) Monday, in a well close to the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) camp in Thirunelveali in Jaffna. The body had severe assault injuries. The 54-year-old family man from Thenmaraadchi was admitted to JTH Monday and had gone missing the same day, according to his wife.

SLA shoots dead 2 youths in Vadamaraadchi

Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldiers shot and killed two youths Wednesday in a sudden cordon and search launched around 5:00 a.m on a house in Koayitkadavai, Thunnaalai in Vadamaraadchi, sources in Vadmaraadchi said. The two youths, one of them the owner of the house, attacked SLA soldiers with hand grenades and gunfire in the clash that lasted till 7:00 a.m, the sources added. One of the victims was identified while the other is yet to be identified.

SLA permits opening of temples inside Point Pedro HSZ

Doors of two Saiva temples located inside Point Pedro High Security Zone (HSZ) were opened for prayers and rituals again after being closed for more than two years, civil society sources in Jaffna said. Koddadi Siththivinaayagar Temple and Koadduvaasal Chandiga Parameswary Temple were closed for poojas and prayers from August 2006 when hostilities broke out between Sri Lanka Army (SLA) and Liberation Tigers.

Kodikaamam police said that the SLA soldiers had opened fire on him as the victim ignored troopers’ order to stop.

SLA searches schools in Jaffna peninsula

SLA soldiers attacked near electricity transformer in Jaffna

Unidentified attackers attacked Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldiers posted at the electricity transformer area at Va'n'naaththi Paalam along Aadiyapaatham Veethi in Kokkuvil in Jaffna Thursday around 7:30 p.m. An explosion caused either by a hand grenade or by a Claymore device was heard from the place of attack, and gunfire followed the blast for nearly ten minutes, residents of the area said. There was no information on casualty or injuries to the SLA soldiers.
