Family man shot dead in Poththuvil

Unidentified armed men shot and killed a family man Sunday around 8:10 p.m in front of his house at Koamaari 01 in Poththuvil Police division in Ampaa’rai district. The killers fired at the victim when he came out of his house located near Tamil Makkal Viduthali Pulikal (TMVP) office, on hearing dogs barking outside, sources in Ampaa’rai said.

Batticaloa candidates to be provided police protection

Unidentified gunmen riding a motorbike shot and killed Sunday around 12.25 p.m, two members of the political wing of Tamil Makkal Viuthailai Pulikal (TMVP), as they were riding on another motorbike from Poththuvil to Thirukkoayil, in Ampaa’rai district. The killing occurred in Oo’ra’ni, Poththuvil, near the 330th mile post area, police said.

Paramilitary gunmen from Pillayaan Group opened fire on Muslims who were emerging from a Mosque in Karbala village in Aaraiyampathi Saturday at 7:55 p.m. Three persons, including a chief Mawlawi were wounded, two of them were in critical state, eyewitnesses told TamilNet. Tension prevails in the village with longstanding settlement dispute between the Tamil and Muslim communities. Shops were closed and additional police and Special Task Force personnel have been rushed to the village, Police said.

Mob smashes SLMC Hizbullah's vehicle in Vaazhaichcheanai

An armed mob Saturday afternoon smashed the vehicle of M.L.A.M Hizbullah, a Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) Executive Committee member and former minister when he went there to meet his party representatives for local election preparations as his party had decided to contest in five local councils. The SLMC has charged that the mob, linked to Muslim ministers aligned with the Mahinda Rajapaksa's government, was trained by the TMVP paramilitary group. Hizbullah has alleged that supporters of Ameer Ali, Sri Lankan minister of disaster relief services, were engaged in sabotaging the meeting he was conducting with the local Muslims.

Residents catch paramilitary robbers in Batticaloa

Residents of Naavatkudaa area in Batticaloa district way laid and caught five members of the paramilitary Pillayaan group Tuesday around 8:00 p.m. as the paramilitary group was about to rob a house in the area, police said. Kanagaratnam Athiravan, one of the five caught, is the person in charge of Kalladi Pillayaan camp. The public got together and caught the robbers, who carried three T-56 type assault rifles with them, and handed the robbers with their rifles over to the Kaaththaankudi police.

Batticaloa elections: Colombo's rehearsal for paramilitary politics

In the backdrop of the Mahinda Rajapaksa Government announcing local government elections in the Batticaloa district, three Tamil paramilitary-cum-political parties, the EPDP, PLOTE, EPRLF (Naba wing) and the yet-to-be-registered TMVP of Pillayan's group revealed that they had reached an agreement to form an electoral alliance after a meeting summoned at the Batticaloa office of the EPDP Saturday. A spokesperson of the paramilitary coalition told media that although the four outfits had agreed on principle, the final decision would be taken after consultations with their respective leaders and key operatives.

Sri Lankan national identity card of Karuna, a former Tamil Tiger commander and later the leader of TMVP paramiitary group that has been deployed by the Sri Lankan forces in their war against the Tigers, has been arrested in Britain on suspicion of immigration offences, including traveling on a false passport, British press reports said this week. International human rights groups are now calling on the UK government to investigate Vinayagamoorthi Muraleetharan (Karuna) for war crimes and are assembling evidence to see whether they can trigger a prosecution, reports said. Amid fears by rights groups that Karuna would be deported to Sri Lanka, some press reports said he had applied for asylum in Britain.

The Meenakam house of the main faction of TMVP (Karuna) paramilitary group, guarded by the Sri Lankan Police, was raided by the rival Pillayan faction Monday night, Batticaloa Police said. Three Karuna personnel have been captured by the Pillayaan faction. Special Task Force (STF), the elite counter-insurgency arm of the Sri Lankan police, has been deployed in other Karuna camps in Batticaloa, strengthening security, Police said.

Paramilitary men who knocked the doors of a 55-year-old farmer (Poadiyaar) in Vanthaa'rumoolai, shot him dead Friday early morning around 1:10. The victim, Kannaayiram Peethamparam, a father of three, was shot in his chest and hands with 7.62 mm rounds that are used in T-56 assault rifles, according to the Police. Vanthaa'rumoolai is located 17 km northwest of Batticaloa city.

Paramilitary post attacked in Ampaa'rai, 1 killed

A 16-year-old recruit of the TMVP (Karuna) paramilitary was gunned down when a group of armed men stormed a checkpost located 50 meters from the TMVP camp at Annamalai in the Chava'lakkadai police division of the Ampaa'rai district. The attackers had seized a T-56 assault rifle from the recruit, Police said.
