Sri Lanka opposition exhorts rejection of cease-fire deal

Sri Lanka's main opposition parties and several Sinhala nationalist groups held a large public rally of more than five thousand in Colombo Tuesday, condemning peace negotiations between Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesighe's government and the Liberation Tigers as a conspiracy to divide the island. The main speakers at the rally exhorted the Sinhala people to reject the cease-fire agreement between Colombo and the LTTE.

Ministry officials complain army harassment at Muhamalai

A team of officials from the Ministry of Social Services said Sunday that they were subjected to undue search by Sri Lanka Army personnel at the Muhamalai entry point in when they were on their way to Jaffna yesterday. The officials came to Jaffna Saturday with a consignment of tricycles, spectacles and sewing machines for war affected persons in the peninsula. They were on a two-day tour in Jaffna with Sri Lanka's Minister for Social Services Mr. Ravindra Samaraweera who arrived Saturday by air.

Wickremesinghe appoints cabinet of 25

The cabinet of ministers of the United National Front government was sworn in Wednesday afternoon in Colombo. The Prime Minister Mr. Ranil Wickremesinghe kept only the Ministry of Policy Planning to himself contrary to the practice of former heads of Sri Lankan governments to hold key several portfolios such as defence. The UNP MP for Jaffna was appointed a Minister for Hindu Affairs sans cabinet rank. The Minister of Defence is former attorney general Mr. Tilak Marapone. The leader of the Ceylon Workers' Congress Mr. Arumugam Thondaman was appointed Housing and Plantation Infrastructure.

New parliament convenes on December 17

President Chandrika Kumaratunge has decided to convene the 12th parliament on December 17 at 10 a.m., the Presidential Secretariat said in a news release Monday. Earlier, the date of convening the new parliament had been fixed for January 01, 2002. The decision to advance the date of the inaugural session of 12th parliament was taken under article 70 of the Constitution, following representations made by the Marxist Janata Vimukthi Peramuna, the press release added.

President vows to thwart interim administration plans

(News Feature) Sri Lanka’s President Chandrika Kumaratunga Thursday vowed to derail the proposed peace efforts of the main opposition United National Party (UNP) if the latter were to come to power in next month’s Parliamentary elections, the state owned Daily News said Friday. Kumaratunga also urged people not to betray the country by voting for the UNP. Meanwhile, the ruling People’s Alliance (PA) stepped up its efforts to portray the UNP as unpatriotic and soft on the LTTE by presenting to Sri Lanka’s influential Buddhist clergy a tape of a conversation that reportedly took place between a UNP MP and LTTE officials.

Parliament will not be dissolved says SLFP

Investigators find more in Jaffna hospital grave

Forensic investigators found more human skeletal remains in a pit dug near the mortuary of the Jaffna Teaching Hospital Wednesday. Medical-legal sources said that the bones appeared to be mostly those of young persons. Bones and teeth that were found in the pit today were taken in three boxes for further forensic examination. The Jaffna courts ordered an investigation after construction workers of the Jaffna Municipal Council who were digging at the site came upon human bones and a saree on 18 September.

PA-JVP talks continue

Govt. not to re-table last year's draft Constitution -President

President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunge said Friday that the draft Constitution tabled in parliament in August last year and later withdrawn will not be considered in preparing the new constitution. The President told a group of special representatives of the Joint Trade Unions' Federation that the new constitution will be presented within a short period, after seeking opinions of the clergy -including the Mahasangha, minorities, minor political parties and intellectuals.

Thirty five under SIU, SLA detention in Vavuniya

Thirty-five persons are being held in the Sri Lanka army's 21-1 brigade base and the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) of the Police in Vavuniya, district court sources in the northern border town said Friday. All were taken into custody under the Emergency Regulations, they said. The detention of the thirty-five was determined when the Vavuniya district judge Mr. M. Ilancheliyan Thursday visited the two detention centres gazetted under a new Emergency Regulation. He instructed the officers in charge of the detention centres at the 21-1 brigade and the Police SIU camp to inform the Human Rights Commission of a person's detention within 48 hours of his/her arrest and to display a list of all persons in their custody at the district court every fortnight.

Monks lead Colombo protests over Buddhist shrine

There was tension in the Sri Lankan capitol Colombo Wednesday morning after several unauthorized structures, including a Buddhist shrine were demolished by workers of the city's Urban Development Authority. Thousands of angry protestors led by buddhists monks blocked the traffic through Punchi Borella junction protesting against the destruction of the Buddhist Vihare.

Chandrika’s mistrust of media manifest in censorship- CPJ

The Committee for the Protection of Journalists, the New York based media watchdog, said Sri Lankan President Chandrika Kumaratunga's censorship policy “is just one manifestation of her basic mistrust for the media” and that she had introduced emergency regulations that included “some of the harshest censorship measures ever imposed in the country” in a statement ‘Attacks on journalists 2000’ issued Monday. CPJ said that in Sri Lanka, “Violent attacks against journalists were typically committed with impunity”. “Even when the government has paid nominal attention to pursuing justice, it has come up short”, notes the statement.

Sri Lanka taps Lover's Day to fight war

RSF protests journalist's arrest

RSF asked the Minister to inform it of the reasons for this detention.

Aid ‘disconnect’ in Paris

However, with the meeting concluding sans the customary pledges of monetary assistance and the critical tone of the final statement from the Forum - with warnings of the need for “an utmost sense of urgency” from the government and “a sense of frustration amongst donors” - it is clear that things have not gone according to plan for President Chandrika Kumaratunge.
