Amnesty concerned over new "disappearances"

Amnesty International said Monday it was concerned for two Tamil men who have been reported "disappeared" after being arrested by Sri Lanka Army soldiers in Vavuniya this month. The London based human rights pressure group said there has been an increase in reports of torture, "disappearances" and deaths in custody since new emergency regulations were introduced by the President in May 2000.

Vavuniya blast kills 2, wounds 2

Two Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldiers, including an officer, were seriously wounded in an explosion in the high security zone of Vavuniya town around 5.30 p.m. Wednesday, security sources said. SLA sources in Vavuniya said that the explosion was caused by a suicide bomber, who was also killed in the incident. A civilian bystander, Thiruvaathirai Pushpalatha (12), was killed in the blast, sources said.

Tigers attack two SLA camps in Mannar

Two Sri Lanka Army (SLA) camps located near the Puthukulam junction in the Mannar district were attacked and destroyed by the Liberation Tigers Wednesday, the Voice of Tigers radio said in its night news broadcast today. At least 9 SLA soldiers were killed and 13 wounded in the attacks, the radio added.

Ten civilians wounded in Vavuniya blast

Three persons were killed and ten were wounded in an explosion inside a 'video-theatre' in Thonikkal, a suburb of Vavuniya town around 5.30 p.m Friday. Two children were among those killed in the explosion. Police said that the explosion was caused by a grenade. Two persons who were seen running away from the scene of the explosion were killed by a Police patrol who had gone to the video theatre minutes before the blast.

Mannar workers demand war deduction back

Vavuniya HRC records 55 complaints

Human Rights Commission (HRC) in Vavuniya received 55 complaints regarding arrests by the Sri Lanka Army and Police during July. The HRC has not been able to find the whereabouts of three of them. Thirty-three are detained by the security forces, and 19 have been released after being questioned, Mr.Sreetharan, the Chairman of the HRC in Vavuniya said today.

Strike over suspected police abduction
