Security tightened in Jaffna, trader shot dead

Two Sri Lanka Police constables were killed, one Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldier and two cadres of Eelam People's Democratic Party (EPDP) were injured when the pickup truck they were travelling in from Ariyalai along Navalar Road came under claymore attack, close to Kachcheri-Nallur junction, at 11:50 a.m. Thursday, sources in Jaffna said.

Three EPDP cadres shot dead in Jaffna

Unidentified gunmen shot dead three cadres of Eelam People's Democratic Front (EPDP), including the group's principal organizer for the Jaffna islets, at 11:30 a.m. in the central part of Jaffna town Thursday, sources from Jaffna said. One EPDP cadre was injured in the attack. EPDP is a paramilitary group operating with the Sri Lanka Army (SLA). A youth was killed and the owner of a clothing store was injured when Sri Lanka Police opened fire after the killings.

Jaffna fisher familes driven to abject poverty, starvation - NPFC

Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) closed the only land route to Jaffna islets through Allaipiddy from Sunday morning, civil society sources in Jaffna said. Civilians are stranded on either side of the closed road, and with the shortage of essential items prevailing in Jaffna district, islets' residents will suffer further deterioration of living conditions, civil society members said.

650 civilians caught in military travel arrangement

Around 650 civilians, out of 7000 persons, who rushed to Sinhala Mahavidyalayam site in Jaffna Friday, following announcement by the civil authorities of the Sri Lankan government in local media that a travel arrangement was made for 650 persons to be selected on a first priority basis, are being held inside buses without notifying the travellers on the mode of travel. Meanwhile, NGO sources in Jaffna expressed fear that Sri Lanka Navy was about to use the civilians as human shields to undertake a ship movement from Kankesanthurai.

Sri Lanka Navy Commander visits Jaffna

Commander of the Sri Lanka Navy, Vice Admiral Wasantha Karannagoda, visited Thursday Northern Naval Area Command in Karainagar and inspected the SLN installations Elara at Karainagar, Uttara in Kankesanthurai (KKS) and the key officers of the six shore establishements. The SLN commander also visted Mandaithivu's Allaipiddy area where around 40 civilians were reported killed or missing in Sri Lankan artillery fire 3 weeks ago when the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) marines entered Mandaithivu. Food supplies to Jaffna islets would be transported by Sri Lanka Navy, the navy commander told a civilian audience.

Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) has barred all members except one in each family to travel to Jaffna mainland from Jaffna Islets from noon Friday, residents of Kayts said. Hundreds of families who were planning to relocate to areas in Jaffna mainland seeking safety are prevented from relocating even though the Security Forces have lifted the curfew for five hours from 12:00 noon to 5:00 p.m.

Curfew lifted for 4 hours, no stocks of rice, wheat flour, in Jaffna

Stocks of rice, wheat flour and sugar have gone empty in private shops in Vadamaradchi and Valikamam sectors of Jaffna where curfew was lifted for 4 hours Thursday, when family members separated since last Friday due to the curfew were able to re-join. 300 meter long queues were seen in front of medical shops. No fuel was available. Curfew was lifted between 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. in Valikamam and from noon till 4:00 p.m. in Vadamaradchi and Thenmaradchi, according to the announcement from Palaly military base. Curfew was not lifted in Jaffna Islets where residents were forced to bury more than 30 bodies as the region remains under Sri Lankan curfew continuously for 7 days.

Number of Jaffna civilians injured by SLA shelling rises to 99

Additional 41 civilians seriously injured by Sri Lanka Army (SLA) shelling from Palaly military base towards areas in Jaffna islets from Allaipiddy to Mankumban, were taken to the Jaffna Teaching Hospital Monday by Jaffna branch of the Sri Lanka Red Cross (SLRC), hospital sources said. 54 injured rescued Sunday and the 4 injured helped by the SLRC on Saturday, bring the total injured admitted to the Jaffna Hospital during the last three days to 99, civil society sources in Jaffna said.

Curfew stays in most of Jaffna

Sri Lanka Army, in it's radio broadcast from Palaly, announced Monday morning that the curfew in Jaffna would be lifted for short periods in some sectors of Jaffna. Te military had said the curfew would be eased in Vadamaradchi, Thenmaradchchi and the islets off Jaffna between 1:00 and 3.30 p.m. Monday, but now says the curfew will remain in place. In Valikamam sector, which includes Jaffna town, the curfew will be lifted between 10:00 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.

40 civilians feared killed, 100 wounded in SLA shelling

At least 15 persons were killed and 20 severely wounded when rockets and artillery shells fired from Palaly military base hit St. Phililp Mary Church in Allaipiddy, Sunday morning, where civilians had sought refuge. Ambulances dispatched from Jaffna hospital Sunday evening brought the wounded to the hospital. 37 wounded civilians were rushed to Jaffna hospital from other areas, Allaipiddy, Mankumban and Mandaithivu. Meanwhile, SLA soldiers resumed firing rockets from a Multi Barrel Rocket Launcher (MBRL) from Duraiappa stadium in Jaffna town, Sunday evening, sources said.

LTTE shells hit Palaly, civilians urged to move

Two Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) helicopters, an Mi-24 gunship and a Bell 212 transport, were damaged by LTTE shells which hit the base Friday night, military sources said. The LTTE Friday vowed to repel a Sri Lanka Army (SLA) offensive on the Elephant Pass area and warned people living close to SLA positions in Thenmaradchchi and some of the islands off Jaffna, including the troubled Allaipiddy, to move away from Sri Lanka military positions for their own safety.

Judge reprimands Allaipiddy Investigations Officer

Mr Mahes Perera and his team are tasked to inquire into the Allaipiddy killings and to submit the inquiry report.

SLN Petty officer killed, bodyguard wounded in Jaffna islet attack

Unidentified men, waiting in ambush fired with pistols at the officer of the SLN and his bodyguard attached to the Thurayoor camp in the Jaffna islet of Velanai around 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Police officials said.
