LTTE, SLA clash in Ma'nalaa'ru, SLAF bombs Ira'naimadu

Heavy fighting erupted between the Sri Lanka Army and the Liberation Tigers of Tamileelam in Ma'nalaa'ru (Weli Oya) Monday noon and the clash went on till 6:00 p.m. The Tigers said the SLA abandoned the attempt to breach the LTTE Forward Defence Line in Kokkuththoduvaay and Ma'nki'ndimalai after 6-hours stiff resistance.

Armed men abducted a family man from his residence in Kolumpuththu'rai 28 October around 7:30 p.m and took him away in a Sri Lanka Army (SLA) Buffel Armoured Personnel Carrier (BAPC) according to complaints registered with Human Rights Commission (HRC) Jaffna Monday. A father of three children was abducted from his house Sunday morning at Eazhaalai east and a family man is reported missing from Kokkuvil West, according to complaints made by relatives to HRC Jaffna.

Missing Tamil academic found dead in Colombo

A senior lecturer of the Science Faculty of Jaffna University, Ponniah Mahinan, who was reported missing since Saturday evening in Colombo was allegedly abducted and killed. The body of the victim with scratch injuries, located Sunday, was identified by his wife on Tuesday. The lecturer from the Department of Mathematics had come to Colombo from Jaffna to supervise paper corrections of GCE Advanced Level examinations at the end of September and was staying at a lodge on Daya Road in Wellawatte.

Two unknown gunmen shot and killed a 29-year-old youth who was cycling near Kaladdi junction in Thirunelveali Wednesday around 7:00 a.m. The killing took place in front of a Roman Catholic school, 150 meters near the Sri Lanka Army checkpost. The gunmen were riding in a motorbike, Koappaay police said.

Sea Tigers, Sri Lanka Navy clash in Eastern waters

Three Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) Dvora gunboats were destroyed by the Sea Tigers Thursday night when more than 17 Dvora boats engaged in a heavy sea fight with Sea Tiger flotillas in the seas off Pulmoaddai. 3 Sea Tigers were killed in the fighting that broke out at 10 p.m. Thursday and lasted till 3:30 a.m. Friday till the Sri Lanka Navy boats were pushed back to the east port harbor, towing the damaged boats, Sea Tiger officials told media.

Meanwhile Koappaay police recovered the body of an elderly man hacked to death Wednesday night, found in Koa'ndaavil east.

SLA uses Muslim villagers as human shields in Mannaar

Around fifty Muslim families in the Muslim villages in Musali division in Mannnar are being used as human shields by the Sri Lanka Army that entered the area Saturday morning. Meanwhile, the Tamil civilians in Mu'l'likku'lam village, are moving to LTTE controlled area, sources in Achchangku'lam in Naanaaddaan division said. The area concerned is accessible to both LTTE and SLA but there has been no resistance from the LTTE, the sources added.

Heavy fighting in the seas off Pulmoaddai - LTTE

Three Sri Lanka Navy Fast Attack Crafts (FACs) were damaged and more than 20 Dvora gunboats were chased away by the Sea Tigers, the naval force of the Liberation Tigers of Tamileelam (LTTE), towards Trincomalee port Sunday night after a fierce sea battle off Pulmoaddai that lasted from 10:00 p.m. till 2:30 a.m. Monday, according to Sea Tiger officials in Vanni. Six Sea Tiger fighters were killed in action in the battle, the Tigers said. Meanwhile Sri Lankan military sources claimed that they had sunk a Sea Tiger vessel in the clash.

Jaffna city terrorized, armed men kill three businessmen

A fruit seller, an ice cream bar owner and a worker at the bar in Jaffna city were shot and killed by armed men who walked into their businesses Sunday noon. Armed men with hand guns chased the fruit seller who was selling grapes in the pavement of Hospital Road, opposite the bus stand, and shot him dead while he was running for his life calling for help. Later, an owner of an ice-cream bar and his assistant were shot and killed, 200 meters away, behind the bus stand on Jaffna Power House Road. Tension prevails in Jaffna city following the killings in broad daylight in the heart of the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) High Security Zone (HZS).

SLAF, SLA attacks displace 3500 civilians in Batticaloa

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka Army (SLA) stationed at 23-3 Brigade Head Quarters in Batticaloa, Valaichchenai Paper Factory, Chenkalady, Vavunathivu and Mylambavely Army Camps fired artillery shells into LTTE areas.

Staff boycott work after monk goes berserk inside Secretariat

Officials said the belligerent Thera falsely accused the staff of reneging on providing funds allocated to renovate the Sri Mangalaramaya Vihara where he is the chief priest, Secretariat sources said.

Armed abductors, riding in white van and three-wheelers, during curfew imposed nights in Jaffna for the past 3 days, have abducted at least 10 persons, issuing death threats to the victims' families warning them not to file complaints with the Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission (SLHRC) and the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM), according to eyewitnesses in Kokkuvil, 6 km northeast and Alaveddy, 11 km north of Jaffna town. Meanwhile, an automechanic was shot into his eyes and killed at his workshed at Thattatheru Junction Saturday around 3:30 p.m. A family man was rushed to hospital with gunshot wounds in Vadamaradchi in the morning.

Five civilians slain in Jaffna on a single day

Civilians in Jaffna alleged Friday that Sri Lanka Army personnel in plain cloths were behind five separate killings in a single day on Thursday. An 18-year-old student, a woman and a photographer were among the victims. One of the five victims was abudcted by gunmen riding in a white van, shot and killed during the curfew hours at midnight, civilian sources said.

Burnt body of youth recovered in Jaffna

A body of an unidentified youth, with gun shot wounds, whose face was burnt with tyres to hide his identification, was found by Jaffna Magistrate R.K.Viknarajah at Potpathy Road, Kokkuvil in Valikamam area, in front of the LTTE's former Cultural Wing office, Tuesday morning, sources in Jaffna said.
