Sri Lanka Army (SLA) authorities in Jaffna today confirmed that a military operation has begun in Pooneryn area, in the northwest of the island. SLA troops air lifted from Palaly Air Force (SLAF) base in seven helicopters landed in Kattunallur-Kalmunai and started moving towards Pooneryn area Thursday morning, sources in Jaffna said.

Father identifies decapitated man

The father of Rajaratnam Rajeswaran, 23, a youth who was reported missing from Karaveddi since February 21, positively identified the head that was found in Jaffna as that of his son this evening. Human rights sources in Jaffna said that the Police were unable to record his statement as Rajaratnam, a resident of Nallur, had become distraught and disorientated after seeing his son's severed head.

Banner marks Tiger anniversary

The Liberation Tigers put up banners by the road all over Jaffna to commemorate Col.Kittu (Sathasivam Krishnakumar), one of their senior leaders who was killed in January 1993 in mid sea when he ordered the ship he was sailing in to be blown up rather than surrender to the Indian Navy that had intercepted his vessel and was demanding his surrender.

Disappearances continue in Jaffna

An official from the Human Rights Commission (HRC) in Jaffna said that 201 people were arrested during the last year. In 67 of the cases the relatives of the detained were not given any confirmation of the arrest. These arrests were made by both the security forces and the Eelam People's Democratic Party.
