2 Police constables killed in Jaffna claymore attack

Two Sri Lanka Police constables were killed when unknown assailants triggered a claymore mine fitted to a motorcycle parked near the junction of Clock Tower road and Hospital road in the security reinforced high security zone (HSZ) near Jaffna town Friday 3:00 p.m., sources in Jaffna said.

Jaffna bids farewell to slain MP, relatives reveal assassination attempt

0A key EPDP paramilitary operative with a handgun had been searching for Nadarajah Raviraj when the late Tamil parliamentarian visited his hometown last month, revealed relatives who attended the funeral of late MP in Jaffna. The entire Jaffna peninsula was at a standstill as the funeral procession paraded through the streets of Chavakachcheri to the cremation grounds located at Sri Lanka Army High Security Zone. Journalists were harassed by Sri Lankan soldiers after the funeral.

SLA forces Union college to relocate

Thomas Saundaranayagam, at a press meet held Saturday at 10.30 a.m at the Bishop's House, appealed to the President of Sri Lanka and Sri Lanka security forces to consider favorably demands of the Jaffna District Student Federation (JDSF), and to create conditions conducive for education in Jaffna, civil society sources in Jaffna said. Jaffna students are to return attending schools after the Civil group convinced the JDSF to call off the 3-week long boycott in a conference held Wednesday.

Armed robberies increase during curfew hours in Jaffna

Seven armed masked men robbed more than Rs. 100,000 in cash, and jewellery worth many hundred thousands rupees Monday night from residents in five houses located in the Kachchery-Nallur road region inside Jaffna Municipality during the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) imposed 'dusk to dawn' curfew hours, sources in Jaffna said. During the same night unidentified gunmen beat to death a 75 year old woman at Elalai North located close to the High Security Zone (HSZ) before disappearing with valuables from her house.

Arrested Kalpity fishermen to appear in Mannar Court

Government of Sri Lanka (GoSL) expelled three medical specialists of Médecins Sans Frontiérs (MSF) (France) serving in Point Pedro Manthikai Government hospital in Vadamardchchi Sunday, medical sources said. The hospital fell inside newly extended High Security Zone (HSZ) declared by the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) after Aug 11 when clashes erupted in the Jaffna peninsula between the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and the SLA, said Manthikai hospital sources.

Two civilians shot dead in Jaffna

A betel leaves vendor was shot dead inside the High Security Zone (HSZ) of Jaffna town by unknown gunmen at 7:25 a.m., and another civilian was shot dead in Kopay at 8:10 a.m. by unidentified gunmen riding in a motorbike, sources in Jaffna said. The arbitrary killings, following nearly a week of absence of violence in Jaffna, have brought back fear in the peninsula and has raised the specter of 1996-1997 killings and disappearances.

Managing Director of Jaffna Tamil daily "Namathu Eelanadu" and the veteran chairman of Multi-Purpose Co-operative Society (MPCS) in Tellippalai, Jaffna, Sinnathamby Sivamaharajah, 68, was shot and killed at his temporary residence inside the High Security Zone of the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) in Tellippalai Sunday night around 7:20 p.m. Mr. Sivamaharajah is a former parliamentarian (TULF) and a senior member of Ilankai Tamil Arasu Katchi (ITAK), the main constituent party of the Tamil National Alliance (TNA).

Sri Lanka says "talks offer" as fighting continues

As heavy fighting continued between the Liberation Tigers and Sri Lanka’s military in the northern Jaffna peninsula, the government in Colombo claimed Sunday to have received on Friday an offer of talks from the LTTE and that it was accepting it. The government announcement came as press reports said the military’s air bridge to the Jaffna peninsula had been cut as the Palaly airbase continued to remain under LTTE artillery fire. The sea lines to Jaffna were also being disrupted by LTTE shelling of Trincomalee port.

Paramilitaries set fire to Tamil paper newsstand in Batticaloa

0A paper distributor's shop located in the High Security Zone (HSZ) in Batticaloa town was completely burnt early morning Saturday, sources from Batticaloa said. Muruges and Son Stores which is on the Batticaloa Central Road was 75 meters from the Special Task Force (STF) troopers camp next to the Batticaloa Clock Tower. Batticaloa residents allege the shop was burnt by paramilitaries working in collaboration with the SLA. Paramilitary cadres have warned paper distributors to cancel two mainstream papers, Sudar Oli and Thinakkural, published in Colombo in Batticaloa Sri Lanka Army controlled areas. Meanwhile, Batticaloa Police said they suspected electric short caused the fire.

Pon. Ganeshamoorthy, 56, killed when he was getting ready to go to work from his residence at the Post office junction in Thirunelvely, according to sources in Jaffna.

Disappeared teen's body found in Karainagar

The body of Thiyagalingam Senthan, 16, a student from Karainagar who was reported missing from 24th July by his parents, was found with gunshot wounds his residence in the Jaffna islet Friday, sources in Kayts said. A handgun, about 50 unused rounds, and a waist belt were found near his body, Kayts police said.

Two SLN soldiers injured in Velani grenade attack
