Deadly flu spreads to East

The deadly influenza A virus, that caused havoc in Colombo and other towns in south, central and northwest Sri Lanka, has now moved to the East, with Trincomalee town recording the deaths of three children and the wards at Batticaloa hospital chock-a-block with patients, said sources in the East. Three students, two females and one male, have died in Trincomalee.

Child killed in deadly game

Weerasingham Selvarajah, 28, a leader in the main para-military group operating with the Sri Lankan army in Batticaloa was killed in his house in Thimilatheevu a suburb of this eastern town this afternoon when a grenade, the clip of which he had playfully removed to amuse his 3 year old daughter, went off. The little girl was also killed on the spot. Weerasingham's wife was seriously wounded in the explosion.

Para-military soldier killed

One Sri Lankan para-military soldier was killed and a Sri Lankan Policeman was slightly wounded in a fracas in Batticaloa this afternoon around 1.45 p.m. said Sri Lankan Army sources in the area. The fracas began when two soldiers of the Razeek group, the much dreaded para-military outfit operating with the SLA in Batticaloa, were stopped by the Sri Lankan Police near Shivananda Maha Viththiyaalayam in Kallady for an identity check.

Kfir bombs force thousands to flee

Army orders to close down dispensary
