Unfolding misery

0 More than 72,000 Tamil civilians internally displaced due to the military confrontations in the East, residing in 50 temporary camps in Batticaloa district's LTTE and GoSL controlled areas, are facing serious shortage of food, accommodation, drinking water, sanitation and toilet facilities, according to Batticaloa District Secretariat. Muttur east clashes, followed by battle for Sampoor, and now Vaharai clashes intensifying, the increasing numbers of Internally Displaced (IDPs) in Batticaloa face a dismal future.

SLA launches artillery attack on LTTE territory in Vavunathivu

Soldiers from Sri Lanka Army (SLA) Vavunathivu camp fired mortar and artillery shells from 5:10 a.m Tuesday on the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) held areas in Vavunathivu in Batticaloa, sources from Batticaloa said. SLA spokesperson Prasath Samarasinghe said the attack was retaliation to the LTTE artillery fire on Vavunathivu SLA camp areas from 5:45 a.m to 6:45 a.m Tuesday. He added that one SLA trooper was injured in the LTTE attack.

LTTE repulses SLA attack in Batticaloa

Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) combatants successfully repulsed Saturday around 8:30 p.m an attack by Sri Lanka Army (SLA) and its collaborating paramilitary group from Black Bridge SLA camp at Chenkalady in Batticaloa on the LTTE held Karadiyanaru area, LTTE Batticaloa district political wing sources said. Three SLA troopers were seriously injured while no one was injured on their side, the sources added.

3 Karuna paramilitary cadres shot dead in Batticaloa

Unidentified armed men using pistols shot dead on the spot Monday around 8:30 a.m three cadres of Karuna paramilitary group standing along the Main Road near Chenkalady market in the Earvur police division in Batticaloa, sources in Batticaloa said. One civilian, standing by and seriously injured in the shooting was first rushed to Chenkalady hospital and later transferred to Batticaloa Teaching hospital for further treatment.

Around 4000 people from nearly 1000 families from Vaharai area in the LTTE controlled Batticaloa district arrived to military controlled area on Thursday and Friday and the authorities made arrangements to house them in the villages of Mankerny, Vinayagapuram, Kiran, Chenkalady and Savukkady, S. Punniyamoorthy, the District Secretary of Batticaloa said.

2 SLA troopers, 1 policeman injured in Chenkalady mortar attack

Sri Lanka Army (SLA) Batticaloa said two of its troopers including a woman, and a policeman were injured in a Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) mortar attack launched Tuesday from 3:45 p.m until 4:15 p.m on its sentry post at the Black Bridge on the Chenkalady-Badula road leading into LTTE held region. Two mortar shells fell and exploded near the sentry post injuring the victims, the source added.

72,000 displaced from Batticaloa, Trincomalee districts

Batticaloa District Secretariat reported Monday that 41,463 people from Trincomalee district and 30,630 people from Batticaloa have fled to the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) controlled areas in the Batticaloa district from the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) held areas. Mr. S. Puniyamoorthy the District Secretary said that the Internally Displaced People have been sheltered in 22 temporary locations in 14 Grama Seveka divisions in Batticaloa district.

Body with gunshot wounds recovered in Batticaloa

The body of a youth with hands bound and gun shot wounds was recovered by Eravur Police in Sithandy in Murkodanchenai Monday morning. Bullet wounds in the victim's head indicated a T-56 gun was used in the killing, police said.

Two caught in Eravur bomb explosion succumb to injuries

The 2-year old, Kandasamy Rajkumar, died on Friday while Sathananthan Yasothini, 16 ,died on Monday hospital sources said.

Fifteen youths abducted in Batticaloa

Fifteen students of Chenkalady Central College are alleged to have been abducted on Monday at 5.30 pm in Chenkalady in Batticaloa district by armed men traveling in a white van. The parents of one of the missing have lodged complaints with Eravur Police, International Red Cross(ICRC) and Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission(SLMM), Tuesday afternoon, civil society sources said.

One man, three teens and two children, collecting vegetables in a field located on Chelvi Theatre Road in Chenkalady in Eravur police division Batticaloa, were seriously injured Thursday 8:30 a.m, when a bomb concealed in the garden exploded, said Eravur police. The injured were rushed to Eravur hospital first and then transferred to Batticaloa Teaching hospital for additional treatment.

The paramilitary cadres were at sleep inside the Chenkalady Pillayar temple, close to the Black Bridge camp of the Sri Lanka Army, located 15 km northwest of Batticaloa town.
