0Hundreds of students of Hartley College and Methodist Girls High School located in the High Security Zone (HSZ) in Point Pedro setup road blocks and protested against the Sri Lanka Army's (SLA) attempt to construct a new checkpoint on College Road leading to both schools, Monday at 8 a.m., sources said. SLA soldiers fired warning shots into the air and tear gas to disperse the protesting students.

Grenade attack on SLA sentry near Point Pedro schools

Sri Lanka Army (SLA) sentry point, serving as the gateway to Hartley College and Methodist Girls High School located within the Point Pedro High Security Zone (HSZ), came under grenade attack at 7 p.m. Saturday sources said. Gunmen riding a motorbike lobbed the grenade and escaped via the Hostel Road. Point Pedro SLA declined to disclose the damages to the sentry.

Two LTTE suspects escape from Jaffna jail

Two suspects alleged to be members of Liberation Tigers kept in remand in Jaffna jail escaped with two accomplices who entered the jail posing as spectators and threatened prison officials with hand guns at 4.30 p.m. Friday, security sources in Jaffna said. The four escaped in motorbikes along Columbuthurai Road.

SLA allows limited cultivation in Thenmaradchi HSZ lands

Sri Lanka Army (SLA) Friday morning handed over a portion of agricultural lands in Thanankilappu in Thenmaradchy Jaffna coming within the purview of high security zone of Thenmaradchchi south division in Jaffna district for cultivation. Farmers who have obtained prior permission from the SLA will be allowed daily to the agricultural lands within the stipulated time, according to the restriction imposed by the SLA, civil sources said.

CTTU to strike on Teachers Day

The Ceylon Tamil Teachers Union (CTTU) gave notice to Dr Tara de Mel, Secretary of the Ministry of Education and Higher education, that its members will go on one day sick leave as a token trade union action on October 5 as the Education Ministry has failed to fulfill its promises regarding its twenty five demands. The CTTU said that it will be compelled to go on continuous strike from October 24 if the demands are not met.

For the past several years the SLA refused permission for the hospital to function nand cancer patients in Jaffna often had to travel to Colombo to obtain life saving treatment in Maharagama.

The road is currently closed for public use.
