Bomb blast in SLA camp in Valikaamam

A bomb exploded with a loud noise Wednesday around 7:30 p.m during power-cut in the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) camp located in Vi’laan, I’lavaalai in Valikaamam, sources in Jaffna said. Though it is said that three SLA soldiers sustained injuries no official report has been released by SLA authorities in Jaffna. Meanwhile, SLA soldiers engaged in road patrol near Jaffna University opened fire Thursday afternoon on some youths riding bicycles, claiming that the youths refused to be checked.

Thousands of civilians under SLA custody in Vanni

Sri Lanka Army (SLA) is said to be holding civilians from Vanni in Iyakkachchi without permitting them to enter Jaffna, since Monday, according to reliable sources in Jaffna. So far, only 4,325 civilians who were brought to Point Pedro in fishing boats by Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) have been placed in the SLA 'detention centres' in Thenmaraadchi, according to Divisional Secretariat sources there. Several thousands of civilians were caught by the SLA on Tuesday when it advanced its troops into the 'safety zone'. Exact number of civilians in SLA custody is not known. The SLA has been accused for separating females, males and elderly and for subjecting the separated for 'filtering' before placing them in separate internment camps.

SLA conducts large scale cordon, search in Jaffna peninsula

Sri Lanka Army (SLA) in Jaffna launched sudden large scale cordon and search operations Saturday and Sunday in many parts of Jaffna peninsula, deploying thousands of soldiers, sources in Jaffna said. Nalloor, Chu’ndukku’li areas in Jaffna, Yaakkarai and Kizhavi Thoaddam in Vadamaraadchi besides certain areas in Valikaamam and Thenmaraadchi were subjected to cordon and search blocking all traffic through the above areas, the sources added.

SLA reimposes ban on outboard motor fishing in Jaffna lagoon

Sri Lanka Army (SLA) Jaffna has reimposed the ban on outboard motor fishing in Jaffna lagoon for an indefinite period from Thursday, according to Fisheries Society sources in Jaffna. Thousands of families on the coast of Jaffna lagoon are affected by the ban which is said to have been reimposed as a security measure for the Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) vessels transporting troops from Kurikaaduvaan in Jaffna to Mannaar, the sources added.

SLA shelling kills ICRC Team Leader in Vanni

One of the three Team Leaders of the ICRC in Vanni, 47-year-old Sinnathurai Kugathasan, was killed in Sri Lanka Army (SLA) shelling on Wednesday inside the 'safety zone', according to rescue workers. Mr. Kugathasan, also known as Ramanan, was from Kollangkaladdi in Valikaamam North, Jaffna. At least 2 ICRC officials have been killed and three reported wounded in Sri Lanka Army (SLA) shelling within the so-called safety zone so far.

Apply adequate pressure on Colombo for ceasefire and negotiations: LTTE

The LTTE is not a movement believing that war is the only means to achieve the aspirations of the people it represents. But, political solution needs an environment conducive to it. The IC can play a positive role by adequately pressurizing Colombo for ceasefire and by promoting negotiations between GoSL and the LTTE as equal partners with due recognition, said Selvaraja Pathmanathan, the LTTE plenipotentiary for international relations, in an interview to TamilNet on Monday. On the issue of civilians, Mr. Pathmanathan said they have already asked the IC, what international instruments now hold GoSL accountable for the denial of basic rights of the people already moved and presently living in the internment camps.

SLA launches extensive search operations in Jaffna peninsula

Sri Lanka Army (SLA) launched large scale cordon and search operations in areas in Vadamaraadchi, Thenmaraadchi and Valikaamam in Jaffna peninsula from Sunday early morning till evening, sources in Jaffna said. Warned by its Intelligence Wing of infiltration into the peninsula by Liberation Tigers, SLA has stepped up cordon and searches besides strengthening its security arrangements throughout the peninsula, the sources added.

Court recommendation on moving HSZ in Valikaamam ignored

The committee appointed by Supreme Court to consider its recommendation to expedite resettlement of displaced residents from the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) High Security Zone (HSZ) in Thellippazhai met Sunday in Palaali SLA head quarters headed by President of the committee, Jaffna High Court magistrate, R. T. Vicknarajah, to discuss the recommendation. The committee, however, decided on certain other measures related to the issue Sunday, ignoring the recommendation of the Court, attendees of the meeting said. Meanwhile, the committee’s announcement that demining work in the said HSZ has begun is refuted by the District Coordinating Committee (DCC) in Jaffna District Secretariat, the sources added.

Toddy tapper knifed to death in Jaffna

93,877 displaced 19 years ago yet to be resettled in Jaffna

Nearly 93,877 civilians belonging to 27,601 families displaced due to war from various parts of Jaffna peninsula 19 years ago still languish in refugee camps while most of them are living with their relatives or friends, a statistical report of Jaffna Secretariat said. 73,672 persons of 21,591 families were displaced before 31 December 2005 and 20,205 persons of 6,010 families were displaced after the A9 land route to Jaffna peninsula was closed by Sri Lanka Army (SLA) in 2006, according to the report.

Indiscriminate felling of Palmyra palms by SLA in Jaffna

Sri Lanka Army (SLA) has been engaged in felling thousands of Palmyra palms mostly in private lands in the SLA occupied High Security Zone (HSZ) using the trunks to construct additional sentry posts along Vadamaraadchi coasts, in the last three days, sources from Vadamaraadchi said. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) in Vadamaraadchi north has been conducting war rehearsals during Wednesday and Thursday nights firing artillery shells towards the sea using illumination, local residents said.

Colombo ignores Court order to resettle Jaffna IDPs inside HSZ

The Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) from their lands occupied by Sri Lanka Army (SLA) enclosed within the High Security Zone (HSZ) in Valikaamam north are being asked to provide alternate choice of location to be resettled in other than their own lands, Welfare organizations of the IDPs said. Colombo Supreme Court instruction to begin resettlement inside the designated areas within the HSZ is being ignored by this new measure adopted by the Ministry of Nation Building, Plantation, and Infrastructure Development in assistance with UNHCR office, they said.

SLA arrests student in Valikaamam

Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldiers took away a 16-year-old school student from his house in Aavarangkaal in Valikaamam east in a search conducted in the area Wednesday claiming that they had found medicinal items including glucose from his house, sources in Jaffna said. The boy’s mother took kerosene oil in an attempt to kill herself while his father is said to have gone into hiding. This incident is related to the killings of two youths shot by SLA soldiers recently in Aavarangkaal, residents of Aavarangkaal said.

SLA shoots dead two youths in Jaffna

A group of unidentified armed men launched an attack Saturday night around 9:45 p.m on Sri Lanka Amy (SLA) soldiers posted at an electricity transformer point in Kapputhoo, Vaatharavaththai area in Valikaamam East, sources in Jaffna said. SLA soldiers opened fire in retaliation killing two of the armed youths while the rest had fled, SLA sources claimed.

Meanwhile, the wife of a three-wheeler driver registered a complaint with HRC Jaffna that her husband had gone missing since 30th October 2008 after leaving to Jaffna from Vavuniyaa.
