SLA artillery fire damages civilian houses in Kaddaiparichchan

At least four civilian houses were damaged and hundreds of people fled for safety when the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) fired artillery shells from Kaddaiparichchan army camp towards villages in the Liberation Tigers held Muttur east around midnight Monday till the early morning of Tuesday. Kaddaiparichchan army camp is located on the border of the territory held by LTTE, sources said.

Tamil youth shot dead in Trincomalee

Tamil exclusion from ADB project triggered dispute - LTTE

The ‘water’ dispute cited by the government of Sri Lanka as justification for its military offensive this week began two weeks ago due to a refusal by Colombo to implement that part of an ADB-funded project which would supply drinking water to Tamils in LTTE-controlled areas and to go ahead with supply to Sinhala colonies in government-controlled areas, the LTTE said in a statement. The intention of the Sri Lankan airstrikes last week was to prevent international ceasefire monitors from meeting local Tamils protesting their exclusion from the ADB project, the LTTE Peace Secretariat said.

Armed men abduct civilian in Eravur

A Savukadi resident, Subramaniyam Krishnamoorthy, 28, was abducted by armed men travelling in a white-van at a play ground in Savukadi a hamlet of Thalavi in Eravur at 6:20 p.m. Friday, residents complained to the Eravur police. The abductors took his motorcycle with them. Mr Krishnamoorthy was about to leave the play ground after playing soccer when he was abducted, sources said.

Elilan, in an urgent letter to the Head of the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) Major General Ulf Henricsson Saturday evening said that artillery attacks by the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) and air strikes by the Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) in the Liberation Tigers controlled territories in the Northeast, tantamounted to Declaration of War by the Government of Sri Lanka (GOSL) against the LTTE. "It is now appropriate for the SLMM to declare publicly that the ceasefire agreement is not holding anymore on the ground," Mr. Elilan told media.

Buildings of the Verugal Muhathuwaram Government Tamil School were damaged and two Tamil civilians were injured when Kifir jets dropped bombs on the area located about 750 meters away from the Kallady LTTE political office where the SLMM head had discussion with representatives of the villagers.

SLA refuses permission for JHU parliamentarians to go to Mavilaru

Venerable Athureliya Ratana Thera, parliamentary group leader of the all monks' party, Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) along with a fellow parliamentarian Venerable Akmeemana Dayaratna Thera began a hunger strike at Kallaru junction on Allai-Kantalai road Friday morning around 9.30 a.m. when the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) refused permission for them to go to the controversial Mavilaru area to reopen the closed sluice gate. About a hundred Sinhalese civilians with two more Buddhist months have also joined the fasting, civil sources said.

Elilan said. Three civilians were also wounded in the attack, according to Mr. Elilan.

Meanwhile, a policeman and a civilian passer-by were injured when unidentified men lobbed a grenade at the police party in front of the public library building in Mannar town centre, around 9.35 a.m., Thursday, police sources in the north-western town said.

The protesters were demanding Colombo not to abandon the project to supply drinking water to Tamil areas, according to S. Elilan, LTTE Trincomalee District political head. Truce monitors intervened and mediated between the Tigers and Colombo to a solution. In the meantime, the SLAF has bombed the area, making the crisis worse, charged Elilan Wednesday night. He said that LTTE has decided to reconsider the decision of lifting the water blockade.

Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) Kfir jets bombed thrice Mavilaru in Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) controlled Vaakarai region in Trincomalee district Wednesday between 4:30 and 5:30 p.m. Two civilians, wounded in the bombing were rushed to Eachilampattu hospital, medical sources said. The wounded civilians were from Thonithandamadu, located close to Mavilaru, located in Serunuwara division. Two houses were destroyed in SLAF bombing, according to S. Elilan, LTTE's Trincomalee District Political Head. Colombo has chosen, according to SLAF spokesperson, to bomb the area following a dispute over water supply from Verukal river.
