Court employees protest against SLA's attempted attack on Judge

0Employees of the Jaffna Magistrate Court picketed outside the court house Tuesday afternoon protesting against the attempted attack by Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldiers on Additional Magistrate Srinithi Nandasegaran's official car on Sunday and threats to her life, sources in Jaffna said. Meanwhile, the three SLA soldiers who were detained for threatening the judge were released on Rs. 50,000 surety bail Tuesday, legal sources in Jaffna said.

Tamils fear to come to Muttur town, SL President told

The Ilankai Tamil Arasu Kadchchi (ITAK) group in Muttur Pradesiya Sabha has brought to the notice of Sri Lanka's President Mahinda Rajapakse that the day to day life of about thirty five thousand Tamil people residing in the Muttur Divisional Secretariat division in the Trincomalee district has been threatened due to abduction and killing now being taking place in the government controlled Muttur town, sources said.

Jaffna Magistrate's vehicle escapes attempted attack

Jaffna Additional Magistrate Srinithi Nandasegaran's official car, with her 10-year-old son and a police guard on board, narrowly escaped from an attempted attack Sunday morning on Palaly Road, eyewitnesses said. Uniformed Sri Lanka Army troopers from Kantharmadam Junction followed the Magistrate's well-familiar official vehicle at gun point in an auto-rickshaw, but gave up their mission as they did not find Mrs Srinithi Nandasegaran in the vehicle, civilians who witnessed the incident said. The incident took place around 9:00 a.m. Sunday.

Vankalaipadu SLN commander gives evidence in Pesalai killings

Mannar Additional Magistrate Mr.T.J.Pirapaharan Friday ordered the Officer-in-Charge (OIC) of Talaimannar Police to record the statement of the Commanding Officer of the Sunny Village Naval Detachment and to produce Lieutenant Commander Rohana Dissanayake of Sunny Village SLN camp on the next date of inquiry. The Additional Magistrate made the above directive at the conclusion of the evidence of Lieutenant Dissanayake Santhana Lakshman Dissanayake, commanding officer of Vankalaipadu Navy camp, legal sources said.

SLMM Trinco head meets Elilan in Sampoor

0Mr.Ove Janssen, head of the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) in Trincomalee Friday morning met with Mr.S.Elilan, Trincomalee district political head, LTTE sources in Trincomalee said. The meeting was arranged to discuss the current ground security situation in the district with the SLMM and to brief the SLMM about the difficulties faced by Tamil civilians in Muttur east, LTTE sources said. The meeting was held in the LTTE district political secretariat located in Sampoor in the Muttur east.

Muslim civilian shot dead in Trincomalee

Unidentified gunmen shot dead a muslim civilian at Ganesh Lane in Palaiyootu, a suburb about six km off Trincomalee town at 7:30 a.m.Friday, sources in Trincomalee said. The person was identified Mohamed Wahid Ali, 41, at the Trincomalee general hospital, Trincomalee Police said.

Uduvil woman raped, murdered

0Ambalavanar Punithavathy, 43, from Uduvil in Manipay area has been shot dead after being raped by unknown assailants at 11:00 p.m. Tuesday, sources in Jaffna said. Assailants who forced entry into the unmarried woman's home, told the occupants that they have come to search the house, attacked the elderly mother before raping the woman, local residents said. The Sri Lanka Army (SLA) camp that houses the Intelligence Wing is located close to the house where the crime took place.

None of the many we met had the slightest doubt on this issue." The report also details the background to the prevailing ground situation in Mannar, urgent efforts required to prevent escalation of tensions, and provide security to the poor fisher families in Mannar.

Man shot dead by SLA inside Thandikulam HSZ

An unidentified man was killed by Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldiers inside Thandikulam High Security Zone (HSZ) near Vavuniya Sunday night, security sources said. The SLA said the dead man is a member of Liberation Tigers and that they had recovered a AK-47 rifle and a new brand of bullet magazine near the dead body. Civil society sources in Vavuniya, however, said that suspicious circumstances surround the killing, and that the dead body may belong to a civilian arrested by the SLA.

Policemen gun down civilian, education official wounded

Policemen in Kaluwanchikudy shot and killed a civilian at point blank range and placed a T-56 automatic rifle beside the dead body, according to residents in the village. The incident took place near Kaluwanchikudy Telecom and Paddiruppu Zonal Education office around 1:00 p.m. Monday. An Education Official, Mrs. S. Baskaran, 40, was wounded in the gunfire. Police sources have claimed that the man, yet to be identified, was an unidentified gunman who had fired on a poice checkpost.

SLA attack on bus driver triggers Jaffna transport workers strike

Members of Jaffna district transport workers union held a peninsula-wide work boycott Monday protesting against the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) attack on a bus driver, conductor and passengers Sunday along the KKS-Jaffna road, transport union officials said. The assaults took place following the grenade attack on SLA soldiers by unknown gunmen at Kokuvil junction on Sunday. The passenger bus from Tellipalai was detained for more than four hours near the Kokuvil junction, affected passengers said.

Seven killed, 13 injured in Trinco claymore explosion

One soldier of the Sri Lanka Army (SLA), one woman home guard, two police constables, a police seargeant and a civilian were killed when a claymore mine exploded at Anuradhapura junction, about three km off the east port city Monday around 11.55 a.m. At least fourteen others were injured, Trincomalee police sources said. Another woman police constable, seriously injured in the explosion, died on her way to the hospital. Conditions of two others are serious, medical sources said.

TRO worker abducted in Valaichchenai

Abducted Tamil civilian killed in Muttur

Mr.Sivasubramanian Suvakaran (40) alias Raju who was abducted by unidentified men Saturday morning at Navalady junction in the Muttur town located close to the police station was found dead with gunshot injuries in a playground at Knox Road in Alimsenai in Muttur town. Muttur Magistrate Mr.Manickavasagar Ganesharajah on receipt of police report visited the site and viewed the body, police said.
