5 dead, thousands displaced due to floods in Jaffna

Heavy monsoonal rains and resulting floods claimed five lives in Jaffna peninsula while 118,273 persons belonging to 32,026 families have been displaced, according to Jaffna Secretariat statistics, civil sources in Jaffna said. Many persons are admitted to hospitals due to injuries sustained by collapsed roofs and falling trees. While rains have subsided, the electricity supply, transport services and telecommunication remain affected. Billions of rupees worth properties and cultivation have been damaged and destroyed in the past four days.

Unrelenting monsoon rains continue in Jaffna peninsula for the fourth day causing floods in areas where Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) are located while fisher families in Vadamaraadchi North and East have been forced to seek shelter in churches and public buildings nearby because of the persisting rain and intermittent hurricanes which had torn off the roofs of many huts, sources in Jaffna said.

Maanippaay police recovered Monday the body of a family man with assault injuries in a shrub land close to his house in Kaddudai in Maanippaay police division in Valikaamam. He had gone missing since Saturday after leaving home, the police said. Meanwhile, a family man from Colombo is reported missing after sending off his relative by ship from Trincomalee to Jaffna, according to the complaint lodged with Human Rights Commission (HRC) in Jaffna by his daughter.

Meanwhile, the family members registered a complaint with Jaffna HRC that their son, as student at the Jaffna Technical College, has gone missing.

KKS harbour activities stall following Sea Tiger attack

Youth shot near SLA camp in Jaffna

Two men on motorbike waylaid a youth Sunday around 6:45 p.m near the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) camp on Dutch Road in I'lavaalai, Valikaamam, and shot him dead after chasing away his two brothers who accompanied him, according to the complaint lodged by the brothers to I'lavaalai police. The brothers said they heard sound of gun shots soon after they were sent back when they went to inform the soldiers of the Vi'laan SLA camp located close to I'lavaalai SLA camp of the incident, the brothers said in the complaint. The soldiers at Vi'laan SLA camp had asked them to come back on Monday morning.

SLA searches schools in Jaffna peninsula

The school offices, stores and other sections were subjected to search but no objects or weapons were recovered in these searches, the sources added.

SLA soldiers search Point Pedro SLTB depot

Sri Lanka Army (SLA) in Jaffna which has been engaged in intensive searches in most of the Saiva temples in Jaffna peninsula and their surroundings from Tuesday, extended the search to Point Pedro Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) Thursday, which lasted for nearly two and a half hours. No one was arrested or any objects were recovered during the search, employees of the depot said. The searches follow the attack on SLA soldiers Monday night at Maasiyappiddi in Valikaamam.

Troop shortages force SLA search delays in Jaffna

With relocation of large number of troopers of the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) to the Northern Front Defence Line (FDL) areas and outer districts, the SLA is allegedly facing difficulties in carrying out prompt cordon and search operations in Jaffna peninsula, informed sources in Jaffna said. The search operation, following the Monday attack on the SLA by the Liberation Tigers at Maasiyappiddi in Valikaamam South West division of Jaffna district , was delayed by nearly two hours, allowing the attackers sufficient time to escape, sources added.
