SC to hold inquiry on JVP's petition against P-TOMS

Sri Lanka's Supreme Court Wednesday decided to hold inquiry into the petition filed by thirty-nine parliamentarians of Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) against the P-TOMS signed by the Government of Sri Lanka (GOSL) and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) on July 12 but refused to issue interim injunction to the stop the implementation of the P-TOMS, legal sources said.

Sri Lanka parliament to hold debate on P-TOMS

Sri Lanka's parliament is to hold two-day debate on the P-TOMS signed by the Government of Sri Lanka (GOSL) and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). The dates for the debate will be fixed at the party leaders' meeting to be held later, Speaker Mr. W.M.J.Lokkubandara announced Tuesday in parliament.

National Patriotic Movement protests against SLMM

Mort than three-thousand supporters of the National Patriotic Movement (NPM) protested in front of the Norwegian Embassy in Ward Place, Colombo, Monday against the slaying of three Sri Lankan Army (SLA) soldiers attached to the Intelligence Unit of 223 Brigade Head Quarters in Batticaloa last Thursday, sources in Colombo said. The National Patriotic Movement, a broad coalition of extreme Sinhala Buddhist nationalists, led by monk Ven. Elle Gunawansa Thero, also accused the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) for its failure to stop the killings.

Cooray reappointed Chief Minister

Governor Mr.Alavi Mowlana Friday reappointed Mr.Reginald Cooray of the United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA) as Chief Minister of the Western Provincial Council removing Mr.Nandana Mendis, after a split in the SLFP increased support to Mr Cooray, political sources said. Mr Mendis took oath of office on 22 June after a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed by the UPFA and the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP). Mr Cooray is to be sworn in on Sunday, Governor Mr.Alavi Mowlana said.

Bhikku Front and Patriotic Movement file cases against P-TOMS

Police fire tear gas on JVP demonstrators in Trinco

JM tabled, pandemoniam in Sri Lanka Parliament

As Minister Mr Maithiripala Sirisena, Leader of the House, began to read the Joint Mechanism proposal in Sri Lanka's Parliament at 9.45am Friday, parliamentarians belonging to marxist Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), including its propaganda Secretary Wimal Weerawanse, started shouting disrupting the parliamentary session in progress. Parliamentary sources said the session has been suspended for ten minutes due to continuous disruption of the proceedings. Copies of the proposed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the Establishment of a Post-Tsunami Operational Management Structure (P-TOMS) were distributed to all parliamentarians in three languages.

The government did not table any document or statement in the parliament on the joint mechanism proposal as widely speculated in the political circles.

SL Parliament to meet with JVP in opposition

Aid deal not final, says Kumaratunga

0Responding to a letter from the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) which listed JVP's reasons for quitting the alliance, Sri Lanka's President Ms Chandrika Kumaratunga said Thursday that a final document for the Joint Mechanism has not been formulated. She added that the proposed mechanism does not go beyond the Cease Fire Agreement (CFA) signed by Ranil Wickremesinghe and that the mechanism will not in any way jeopardize the sovereignty or integrity of Sri Lanka. Political observers in Colombo noted that as no time frame has been fixed for signing the proposal, more political maneuvering and delay in finalizing the aid deal can be expected.

"There is no more talk with the Government. We had left from the United People Front Alliance (UPFA) Government", Mr. Amerasinghe underlined. "My party will sit in opposition in the Parliament," he said, addressing a two-hours long press conference at the Colombo National Library Auditorium Thursday morning. The JVP has 39 seats in the 225-seat Parliament of Sri Lanka.
