SL President appeals for restraint and calm in Trincomalee

Expressing concern and sadness for the violence triggered by the killing of several senior unarmed political cadres of the LTTE in Trincomalee, Sri Lanka's President Kumaratunga appealed for calm and "instructed [authorities] to conduct a complete investigation of the events that have occurred in the Trincomalee area and to take strict action against the perpetrators in accordance with the law."

Ten soldiers injured, security beefed up in Trincomalee

Security has been beefed up in the Trincomalee district following a grenade attack on a truck of the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) injuring ten soldiers including a Lieutenant Wednesday night around 8.30 p.m. at Palathoppur in Muttur division. The attack took place when the army truck was on its way distributing meals to soldiers located in the area, military sources said.

With these casualties the number of soldiers injured in grenade attacks and firing increased to six and policemen to thirteen since Tuesday following the general shut down called by Tamil District Tamil Peoples Forum (TDTPF) condemning the killings of LTTE cadres at Chelvanayakapuram on Sunday, police said.

JVP fundamental rights applications came up before the three member-bench of the Supreme Court comprising Chief Justice Sarath N.Silva, Justice Raja Fernando and Justice Nimal Gamini Amarathunge on Tuesday for further inquiry, legal sources said.

"The government cannot be unmindful of its obligation to take the maximum possible measures to ensure that such incidents do not recur. It is necessary for the Government to take steps to erase the impression of collusion or complicity in such attacks," said in the press release signed by Mr.R.Sampanthan, TNA parliamentary group leader.

At least 7 well armed men, in military uniform, lobbed two grenades into the building and fired at the LTTE officials and civilians inside the residence premises Sunday morning at 10.45 AM. The attack took place a few minutes after a group of Sri Lanka Army (SLA) sodiers, who visited the residence and talked to the LTTE officials, had left the scene, according to residents.

Research book on Tamil language released in Jaffna

A research book on Tamil Language written by a Tamil scholar Pundit V.Paranthaman was released Saturday at an event held in Kailasapathy Auditorium of the Jaffna University. Mr.C.Ilamparithi, Jaffna district LTTE political head handed over the first copy of the book to Ms Thilakavathi Periythambi, Chairperson of the Jaffna District Educational Development Forum and former Director of Education. Dr.S.Sivalingarajah, Dean of the Tamil Department in the Jaffna University presided, sources said.

GTZ funds Elephant Pass Girl's Hostel
