Jaffna postal voting to complete on Monday

Election officials have made arrangements for Jaffna government workers who have been assigned for election duty to execute their postal votes on Monday, sources said. Amid security concerns and calls from different civil organizations including Consortium of Tamil Speaking Peoples Trade Unions to boycott postal votes, the earlier announced two days have been reduced to a single day.

Three policemen, EPDP cadre, tri-shaw driver shot in Batticaloa

Unidentified assailants Thursday morning opened fire at a tri-shaw transporting an EPDP cadre and the policemen providing escort to his vehicle. Three policemen, the EPDP cadre and the tri-shaw driver were wounded and rushed to Batticaloa Hospital. The incident took place near a police post located north of Batticaloa town on Trincomalee Road around 10:30 a.m., police said.

Grama Sevaka officer shot dead in Vavuniya

The GS of Kankankulam village was on his way home from work in a motorbike when two unidentified motorbike-riding gunmen gunned him down on Poovarasankulam - Chettikulam Road 4:45 p.m., police said.

Students, public and School principals, teachers paid their last respects during the funeral ceremony at his Kopay residence and when the coffin was taken to Kopay Hindu cemetary in procession for cremation, sources said. Mr Sivakadadcham was gunned down by unknown assailants in front of his house Tuesday night.

Jaffna Central College Principal shot, succumbs to wounds

Time bomb explodes in EPDP vehicle in Colombo

A time bomb placed inside the vehicle of Eelam People Democratic Party (EPDP) official Mr Anthonipillai Jeyaraja, a personal assistant of EPDP leader Mr. Douglas Devananda, exploded around 7:45 a.m. Thursday, Police said. The explosion occured at No. 16 Nelson Place Wellawatte, north of Colombo. A clerical staff member of Devananda's Ministry, Mr Sudarsing Vijayakanth, 26, sustained minor injuries in the explosion, sources said.

Mr.Krishnan Parameswaran (40), was shot and killed Monday morning around 6:30 a.m.by unidentified men who came in a motorbike. The incident took place at Puthu Road in Anaikoddai area in Jaffna district when the victim was returning home after leaving his wife in the bus stand, police said. EPDP sources in Jaffna have claimed that Mr Krishnan was an EPDP cadre.

Morning fire guts SLMM's Mannar residence

An electric short circuit was blamed for an early morning fire Thursday that gutted the luxury house located along Field Road in Mannar town rented by members of Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM), sources in Mannar said. The short circuit was traced to an air conditioning unit in the basement of the house. Three members of the SLMM who were asleep escaped unhurt, Mannar police said.

The twenty members of Tamil National Alliance, two members of the Up-Country People Front (UPF), Mr. Mano Ganesan of Western Province Peoples Front (WPPF) and Mr. T. Maheswaran of United National Party (UNP) voted aginst the Emergency.

Rajapakse, JVP kick off joint election campaign

Mr. Rajapakse was addressing his first presidential election rally in Colombo Town Hall ground attended by representatives of political parties extending support to Mr. Rajapakse, including the Sinhala extremist Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP). However, Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) key figures including Mr. Ratnasiri Wickremanayake were absent.
