Kantha’laay Koayil burgled, Pi’l’laiyaar statue missing

About one hundred kilo weighing bronze Vinaayakar statue was stolen from the historic Pilliyaar Koayil located in ancient Kantha’laay Tamil village Saturday early morning. The devotees who went to the Koayil to worship Saturday morning were taken aback when they saw the statue of the deity was missing, according to complaints lodged with the Kanthalaai Police.

“Trinco district turned into military garrison”- Sampanthan

Rajavarothiam Sampanthan, leader of the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) parliamentarian brought to the notice of the parliament that Trincomalee district is being turned into military garrison day by day by the Sri Lanka Army and historic Hindu Koayils there are being desecrated and destroyed to settle Buddhist Sinhalese in traditional Tamil villages. He cited the recent incident where unidentified gangs had desecrated the several centuries’- old Sivan Koayil called as Agasthiyar Thaapanam and located in Kanguveali. He added the said temple was founded by Hindu sage Agasthiyar. He said the government agent of the district is a retired Major General in the Sri Lanka Army and the governor of the eastern province is a retired naval commander.

EP Hindu Association condemns destruction of Hindu temples in the East

Eastern Province Hindu Association (EPHA) has expressed its deep grief and strong condemnation against the theft of the Sivalingam of Akaththiyar Thaapanam at Kangu-veali in Moothoor and the destruction of a Murukan koayil on Kunchithapaatha Malai and the construction of a Buddhist Vihara at its location, in Trincomalee district, in a report released by EPHA president Thiyageswaran. The report called on the Tamil ministers in the Sri Lanka government, the Eastern Province Chief Minister and members of Eastern Provincial Council members to eliminate the current threat to Hindu Religion and to safeguard same.

Hindu temple of ritual significance destroyed in Trincomalee

0A Siva temple located at an ancient Hindu site called Akaththiyar Thaapanam, at Kangku-veali in the Moothoor division of the Trincomalee district, where Hindus gather especially to perform the Aadi Amaavaasai ritual for ancestors, was destroyed without any traces coinciding the Heroes’ Day on 27 November. The location of the temple is under the control of Sri Lanka Army stationed at a nearby Sinhala village, Neelaappola. The Sinhala villagers of Neelaappola protected the Tamil villagers of Kangku-veali from displacement in 2006. The Tamil villagers who were shocked and wept to see the temple razed to the ground now, suspect ‘outsiders’ and are scared whether this is a prelude to wipe out their traditional village as well.

Galle Sivan Koayil robbed, 17 artifacts stolen

Seventeen bronze statues including those of Lord Shiva, Krish'naa, and Murukan with his consorts Va’l’li and Theivaanai were robbed from Galle Sivan Koayil Sunday early morning between 12 and 1:00 a. m by an unidentified group of persons. The gang had attacked the watcher of the temple and later tied him to a pillar. Thereafter they forced open the doors of the Moolasthaanam of the Koayil and took away artifacts which are about 150 years old and valued at around 15 million rupees.

Woman sexually abused, killed in Jaffna

The mother of a woman abducted, sexually abused and later killed by unknown persons recently in Araali in Vaddukkoaddai identified the body of the woman as her daughter Friday. The body of the woman had been found dumped in Araali, sources in Jaffna said.

Tamil Nadu fishermen stage protest on World Fishermen Day

Fishermen in Tamil Nadu have decided to fly black flags instead of Indian National flag in their fishing vessels in a protest against Indian Government’s failure to stop the Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) attacks on Tamil Nadu fishermen and condemning the Sri Lankan government, fisheries society sources in Puthukkoaddai district in Tamil Nadu said. Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu fishermen staged a boycott Sunday on World Fishermen Day without going for fishing, remaining in their houses where black flags were seen hoisted, sources in Tamil Nadu said.

Vanni IDPs held in Thenmaraadchi to be settled in Army HSZ in Vadamaraadchi

Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) from earlier Liberation Tiger controlled areas in Vadamaraadchi East beyond Naakarkoayil detained in Mirusuvil and Kodikaamam IDP camps in Thenmaraadchi are to be settled in the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) High Security Zone (HSZ) in Ma’nattkaadu in Vadmaraadchi, according to Maruthangkea’ni Assistant Government Agent (AGA), S. Sriskantharajah. Ma’nattkaadu, Ampan and Kudaththanai villages are located in the HSZ where people are not permitted to move freely by the occupying SLA soldiers, sources in Vadamaraadchi said.

News reports from Colombo indicate Sri Lanka government is planning to revise the Theasa Vazhamai law of Tamils, which is a constituent legal code, ever since the formulation of the island’s current legal system by the Dutch. The urgency of the Sri Lanka state at this juncture is not social reformation but grabbing the lands of Tamils without legal hurdles, besides removing last vestiges of Tamil sovereignty in the state apparatus, Tamil legal circles said.

SLN arrests 18 Tamil Nadu fishermen in the islets of Jaffna

Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) arrested eighteen fishermen from Tamil Nadu Wednesday early morning in the islets of Jaffna for illegal entry into Sri Lankan waters, sources in Jaffna said. Nearly 2000 fishermen in Puthukkoaddai in Tamil Nadu are boycotting fishing demanding the immediate release of their fellow fishermen, sources in Tamil Nadu said. Meanwhile in Tamil Nadu, Indian Navy arrested ten fishermen from Sri Lanka for trespassing on Indian seas Wednesday and the arrested fishermen were handed over to Fishing Harbour police in Tamil Nadu.

SL Army bus kills Tamil girl student in Vavuniyaa

An eleven year-old Tamil girl, Sarma Suhanthini, of Chaanthachoalai in Vavuniyaa died on the spot Friday around 6:00 p.m when a Sri Lanka Army bus, transporting troops from the north, knocked her down along Thaa’ndiku’lam-Vavuniyaa A-9 highway. The accident took place in front of Pramanthu Vithiyaalayam in Thaa’ndiku’lam, sources in Vavuniyaa said.

India denies visa to US rights activist

Indian embassy in New York denied a visa to US-based humanitarian worker and a critic of the Sri Lanka Government, Dr Ellyn Shander to travel to New Delhi to address the Delhi Tamil Sangam on 20th September, Deccan Chronicle reported. Shander was to address the Delhi meeting with MDMK General Secretary Vaiko, after attending meeting in Bangalore with the local Tamil Sangam on 15th of September.

Police arrest suspect in killing of Sinhalese doctor in Batticaloa

Restriction on fishing will continue in Jaffna peninsula – SLN

Ganesh, quoting Northern Region Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) Admiral, sent a circular to local media Friday informing that the fishing restriction imposed in areas close to SLN base in Kaangkeasanththu’rai, Sri Lanka Army (SLA) High Security Zones (HSZ) and areas along the runways and flight routes of aircrafts will continue. Detailed information about the places where fishing restriction is in force, however, was not given by SLN authorities and the fishermen have to obtain the information from their local SLA and SLN authorities, the circular said.

Ramakamalan Wednesday morning. Judicial Medical Officer of Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital Dr. Ajit Jayasinghe was present at the site when the exhumation took place.

Human remains recovered in abandoned land in Batticaloa

Kaaththaankudi police Saturday evening unearthed a fertilizer bag with human remains from an abandoned land located opposite the office of the Department of Irrigation in Kalladi in Batticaloa district. A group of boys while playing in the land had seen some thing buried in the land and immediately brought the matter to the notice of the police.
