SL Police arrests 3 Tamils in Eravur

Eravur Police arrested Monday 3 Tamil youths in Iyankerni, 13 km north of Batticaloa. Residents said the youths, cycling towards a house of their friend around 8:00 p.m., were arrested by the policemen who were hiding along the street. Eravur Police claimed that the youths were in possessing 3 grenades.

SLA, LTTE exchange rocket fire in Batticaloa

Sri Lanka Army soldiers and Liberation Tigers exchanged rocket fire in the eastern Batticaloa in the early hours of Monday. Fighting broke out when Sri Lankan government troops attempted to move from ‘Karuthapaalam’ (Black Bridge) in Chenkalady, through Badulla road in to areas held by the Liberation Tigers, around 2:30 a.m., Monday.

SLA ban affects cultivation in LTTE held Batticaloa villages

Cultivation of paddy in about fifty thousand acres and cash crop in around forty thousand acres in the LTTE controlled areas in Batticaloa district has been completely affected as the farmers are not allowed to enter the government controlled area to buy agro-chemicals, fertilizer for their crops and to purchase petroleum products for the use of tractors via SLA checkpoints located in Vavunativu, Chenkalady and Kiran Bridges and Vaharai road, pointed out Mr. P.Ariyanethran and Miss K.Thangeswary, Batticaloa district Tamil National Alliance (TNA) parliamentarians at a conference held Thursday morning in the Batticaloa District Secretariat Auditorium.

SLA bans Colombo bound heavy vehicles from east

The Sri Lanka Army (SLA) has imposed a total ban on heavy vehicles transporting cargo such as fish, and other perishable goods from the districts of Amparai and Batticaloa to Colombo. These vehicles are stopped at Welikanda and Ottamavadi and sent back to Batticaloa and Amparai. The ban has come into effect since Saturday, civil sources said.

Tamil people living in LTTE controlled Paduvankarai area in Batticaloa District face starvation and danger of health hazards due to the closure of all the entry points to the LTTE controlled area from Military controlled Eluvankarai area by the Sri Lankan Army (SLA) from 12 August, local residents said. "This act of collective punishment by the SLA has affected mostly the poorest civilians in the LTTE-controlled areas in Batticaloa," civil society sources in Batticaloa said.

SLA closes all gateways to LTTE controlled Batticaloa

Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldiers shot dead a Tamil civilian at 6:00 p.m. Friday in Chenkalady near the Bank of Ceylon building area in Eravur Police division, police said. Witnesses said the SLA soldiers first shot Gnanasekaram Santhiran, 30, in his head, and after he fell to the ground, shot him at close range.

Unidentified gunmen shot and killed a Tamil youth, Ponniah Pulendiran, 20, around 9.30 p.m, Monday at Ammanpuram in Kumaraveliyar village, Chenkalady, 15 km Northwest of Batticaloa, Eravur Police said. Pulendtran was with his parents when the gunmen entered the house, forced him out of the house before shooting him in close range, his parents said.

Two young boys killed in SLA attack on civilian tractor

A 12 and a 15-year-old boys were killed when Sri Lanka Army soldiers, who had moved into Thikiliveddai, an LTTE controlled border area, beyond the Kinnayadi lagoon, Saturday afternoon at 3:00 p.m., ambushed a tractor with farmers. The shooting followed an attack on the SLA patrol unit on the Badula road near the Black Bridge, said sources in Batticaloa. The SLA retaliated with mortar attack and gunfire for 20 minutes, added the sources.
