The SL Defence Ministry is using the ‘constitutional’ clause of ‘foremost place to Buddhism’ and ‘territorial integrity’ of the genocidal State to permanently Sinhalicise Keappaa-pulavu. In the meantime, SL Ministry of Resettlement has donated 50 million rupees to SL Defence Ministry to find alternative pockets of lands to the uprooted people. In addition, a cable ferry which was put up by the Dutch relief organisation ZOA for the villagers to cross Aruvi Aa'ru and access their agricultural lands has been dismantled by the SL military in 2008. Today, the villagers are unable to engage in agriculture in more than 200 acres of lands during the rainy season. Clean water is a big problem and some children have been admitted to hospital after drinking tap water in recent times, the villagers complain. On top of this, the SL military has been exploiting the resources by scooping the soil and running a business making red-bricks and doing agriculture in the occupied village. The land grab is a wide-scale issue across North-East, causing increased ethnic tension. Social problems are on increase as many families in the district have fallen victims to the vicious circle of bank loans and debts after 2009. In the meantime Colombo government’s poverty alleviation ‘Samurdhi’ programme stocks savings of people amounting to 2,500 millions of rupees at the banks without being utilized. And the war-affected people are being told that their perpetrators will not be subjected to criminal investigations even if they were to be identified. The Shakthi media, operated by the MTV Channel, has been waging a propaganda campaign of ‘caring for people’ through its TV and FM channels and has launched a ‘secretariat’ to manage the controversial ‘project’, media sources said. The move is perhaps not controversial to the corporate outfit with a shady history of seeking political and commercial influence in the South in the past, but it is highly controversial to the occupied Eezham Tamils in the sense that the people, who are deprived of their sovereignty are being told to look upon the genocidal military as an authority running civil affairs in the occupied North and East, commented Tamil political observers in Batticaloa. She was targeting former SL President Chandrika Kumaratunga (CBK), who is now heading the Office for National Unity and Reconciliation (ONUR), as responsible, accountable and answerable for the crimes committed during her rule. “If the current and former presidents are serious about reconciliation, they should first stop calling the genocidal war a ‘humanitarian war’. They should officially recognize the Tamil struggle as a liberation struggle and those who participated in it as freedom fighters without any qualms or reluctance. We can only start reconciliation from a position that those who were made to disappear were not terrorists,” Ananthy has said vowing to step up the campaign for international justice. Colombo is converting the project, which started off as a 100-houses scheme into a larger five-phased housing scheme and by ‘marketing’ it as ‘reconciliation’ and ‘affordable’ housing scheme for uprooted people. The ulterior motive of the deceptive Keerimalai housing scheme is to weaken the demands coming from uprooted Tamils to release their military occupied fertile lands in Valikaamam North. The five-phased project is targeting to lump together the uprooted people into a 47-acre area.
