15 independent groups pay deposit to contest Jaffna electoral district

Fifteen independent groups have paid deposit money to contest Jaffna electoral district until Thursday evening, sources in Jaffna said. Meanwhile, four independent groups out of the six which had paid deposit money submitted their lists of candidates at Jaffna Secretariat Thursday, the sources added.

The number of independent groups contesting parliamentary election in Jaffna district has risen to six with two more groups depositing money at Jaffna Secretariat Wednesday, sources in Jaffna said. The political parties which had submitted their list of candidates to contest Jaffna district so far are Tamil National Alliance (TNA) and Tamil Makkal Viduthalai Pullikal (TMVP), the sources added.

TMVP submits candidates list in Jaffna Secretariat

Thamil Makkal Viduthalai Pulikal (TMVP) political party led by Eastern Province Prime Minister Pillayan submitted its list of candidates contesting Jaffna district in the forthcoming parliamentary election Tuesday in Jaffna Secretariat, sources in Jaffna said. Four of the twelve candidates are women and the chief candidate in the list is Kanthiah Arumailingam. Meanwhile, Pillayan who had come to Jaffna did not enter Jaffna Secretariat but chose to wait in his vehicle outside Jaffna Secretariat on the occasion due to security reasons, the sources added.

Sivageetha announces support to Fonseka

0Batticaloa Mayor Sivageetha Prabhakaran Friday resigned from the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) and joined United National Party (UNP) to support General (retd) Fonseka in the upcoming Sri Lankan Presidential elections. Ms. Sivageetha was earlier in the TMVP paramilitary group faction led by Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan, the present chief minister in the Eastern Provincial Council. Later she joined the SLFP at the request of Vinayagamoorthy Muralitharan alias Karuna, now a minister the Rajapaksa government who is also one of the vice presidents of SLFP.

TMVP cadre arrested with 4 T-56 rifles in Batticaloa

Kalkudaa Police Thursday arrested a cadre of TMVP led by Pillayan, Chief Minister of the Eastern Provincial Council (EPC), with four T-56 rifles and nine magazines in Maangkearni in Vaakarai division in Batticaloa district. The suspect has been identified as Sinnathamby Vettivel, 26.

A vehicle belonging to the office of Eastern Province Chief Minister’s office in Akkaraippattu was set fire to by unidentified persons Wednesday around 6:00 p.m in Thirukkoayil area in Ampaa’rai district, Akkaraipattu police said. The driver of the vehicle managed to escape and inform the incident to Kaagnchirangkudaa Special Task Force (STF) who handed him over to Akkaraippattu police.

Karuna, Pillayan groups supporting Rajapaksa clash in Ampaa'rai

Three paramilitary men were reported missing when a major clash broke out between rival paramilitary men of TMVP Pillayan group and SLFP Karuna group around 2:15 p.m. at Thirukkoayil in Ampaa'rai district where a group of 50 operatives of Pillayan had gone in three vehicles to campaign for Mahinda Rajapaksa passing the office of the Sri Lanka Freedom (SLFP) manned by Karuna's paramilitary men headed by operative Iniyapaarathi. Three TMVP men sustained injuries, according to Sri Lankan Police. A vehicle, sent to locate the missing persons, has been set on fire around 5:00 p.m. by Karuna's men. The fate of the occupants were not known.

The move is said to be for ‘extracting’ a joint proclamation of them necessary for further power manoeuvres in the island. A couple of years ago it was such a behind-the-scene move of some powers that made most of these parties except the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) to rally behind Mahinda Rajapaksa and pledge support to him in the war that brought in disaster to Tamils, writes TamilNet political commentator in Colombo.

No persons can carry arms in Batticaloa from August 1- DIG

No one would be allowed to carry arms in Batticaloa district except police personnel and members of the State armed forces, said the Eastern Region Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG), Mr. Edison Gunatilake, said. He made this announcement at a meeting held Thursday evening at Thevanayagam Hall in Batticaloa. Members of paramilitary groups, Eelam Peoples Democratic Party (EPDP), Peoples Liberation Organization of Tamil Eelam (PLOTE), Eelam Peoples Revolutionary Liberation Front (EPRLF-Padmanaba wing) and the Tamil Makkal Viduthalai Puligal (TMVP) and senior police and Special Task Force (STF) personnel attended the meeting along with businessmen and entrepreneurs of the district.

Vaazhaichcheanai police recovered the body of the Karuna group person shot and killed Friday night by unidentified armed men at the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) office of Vinayagamoorthy Muraleetharan alias Karuna in Vadamunai Ooththuchcheanai on the border of Batticaloa district, sources in Batticaloa said. The body was recovered near Vadamumani tank with gunshot injuries, the police said.

2 more police detainees shot, killed in Trincomalee

The two suspects in detention in connection with the killing of Varasha, the six-year-old girl, were shot and killed Monday evening in an attack by unidentified gunmen while they were being led by the police to recover weapons hidden in Saradapura jungle near Kanniya on information elicited from the suspects, Trincomalee police said. One of the two suspects arrested earlier and held in police detention in this case was shot and killed by the police who claimed that he tried to escape custody and the other suspect the police claimed he had committed suicide by swallowing cyanide capsule while being taken to another place.

Vaazhaichcheanai police recovered Thursday around 10:00 a.m the body of the Tamil Makkal Viduthalai Pulikal (TMV) person in charge of Vaakaneari, from Ottuveli in their division in a decomposed state, informed by the public. The victim had died due to the injury caused by being hit with a stone, Vaazhaichcheanai district medical officer, Dr. Atchuthan, who performed the post mortem examination said.
