SLA deploys elite forces in Northern Front

Sri Lanka Army has moved more than two thousand heavily armed Special Forces (SF) towards the Forward Defence Line in Thenmaradchi along the Northern Front, military observers in Thenmaradchi said Sunday, speculating a Sri Lankan offensive at any time from Jaffna's FDLs. Sri Lankan troopers were also engaged in intensive night training missions for the last three days in Jaffna's High Security Zone surrounding the SLA's Palaali garrison, in Thondamanaaru and Valalaai areas.

SLA holds Tamil journalist, says RSF

0Reporters sans frontières (RSF) said in a press release issued Friday that Sri Lanka Army (SLA) was involved in the abduction and disappearance of Subramaniam Ramachandran, a journalist working for Tamil daily, Yarl Thinakural. Ramachandran disppeared on 15 February after being questioned at the Kalikai junction, Vadamaradchy SLA camp, and RSF said his collegeues believe that he is being held in an SLA camp.

SLA removes remains of bodies, accuse Mulli residents

A search organised by Point Pedro Magistrate Mr. K. Ariyanayagam and the police Tuesday evening, for the two partly burnt corpses discovered by Mulli residents in a mangrove shrub jungle Monday, ended in failure, sources in Jaffna said. Military boot tracks on the marshy ground were found in the area and residents allege that the burnt corpses have been removed Monday night by the troopers who the villagers accuse of dumping the body there.

175 schoolchildren, 9 staff narrowly escape air strike on school

0Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) Kfir bombers Monday morning bombed a school in Chundikulam, wounding a female teacher and two schoolboys, attending 7th grade and 9th grade at the school, Chundikulam Vidyalayam, located 21 km northeast of Kilinochchi, in the southern part of Vadamaradchi East region in Jaffna district. Three bombs were dropped 25 meters from a class room. A bomb that hit a tree exploded in the air, wounding two children and a teacher. Around 175 schoolchildren, 8 teachers and the principal of the school narrowly escaped from the aerial attack. TamilNet correspondent who visited the site of the attack witnessed a second air strike at 11:45 a.m.

Fisherman shot dead in Point Pedro

Two unidentified armed men on motor cycle chased a fisherman riding motor bike along Thumpalai road in Point Pedro area in Vadamaradchi and shot him dead around 8:30 a.m Tuesday, sources in Point Pedro said. The victim was shot dead ten minutes after returning from the Sri Lanka Army 524 Brigade camp close to his house where he had been to obtain permission to hold his sister's wedding.

Fisherman's body washed ashore in Mullaithivu, one missing

The dead body of a fisherman who was reported missing with another fisherman in Mullathivu since Saturday, washed ashore at Koriyadi in Vetrilaikeni in Vadamaradchi east Monday morning.. Sri Lanka Navy gunboats had fired at the fishermen around 2:30 a.m. Saturday in the seas off Mullaithivu.

Journalist reported missing in Jaffna

The journalist, Subramaniam Ramachandran, 37, a father of two, was last seen at his private tuition centre Thursday evening.

SLA shoots dead youth in Vadamaradchi

Sri Lanka Army (SLA) troopers lying in ambush along an interior road in Thatchanthoppu Pillayar temple area at Karaveddy in Vadamaradchi opened fire on a youth, killing him at the spot Wednesday at 5.45 a.m., Karaveddy residents said. However, military sources in Colombo said SLA killed a youth who had attempted to hurl a hand grenade at the troopers.

Jaffna at standstill on SL Independence Day

Sri Lanka Army troopers fired mortar and artillery shells from Muhamalai Forward Defence Line (FDL) Sunday from 7:30 a.m. towards Iyakkachchi, Palai, Pooneryn and Vadamaradchi East villages in Liberation Tigers controlled areas as Jaffna stood at standstill and the people remained indoors. Roads were empty and silence prevailed in Jaffna. Even the cellular phones didn't ring in the peninsula as the mobile phone link to Jaffna was cut by the military at Palaly. SLA troopers were busy in the morning removing black flags from the environs of the University of Jaffna.

Four civilians abducted in Jaffna, students continue boycott

Two civilians transporting goods in a tractor were abducted on Friday morning at 8:00 am at Pallakkadu junction in Anaicottai area near Jaffna municipal area. The abduction was carried out in broad day light in the presence of public by unidentified men who arrived in a white van. Two more civilians were also abducted, one in Kalviyankadu and the other in Irupalai in two separate incidents Thursday and Wednesday. Meanwhile, the students of Point Pedro Hartley College and Velayutham Maha Vidyalayam continued their demonstration for the fourth day demanding the release of abducted students from their school.

Unknown gunmen attacked two Sri Lanka Army (SLA) camps, located at Vathiry Road in Udupiddy and David Camp in Navindil area, both in Vadamaradchi, Thursday, injuring two in David camp, sources from Jaffna said. Meanwhile, unconfirmed media reports in Jaffna said that a SLA trooper at Nagarkovil SLA front defence line in Vadamaradchi east was killed in Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) artillery attack while SLA sources said one trooper was killed in Tiger sniper fire Thursday evening. It is not known whether both reports referred to the same trooper.
